I love "Domino", Rahsaan Roland Kirk's great 1962 album. Recorded duriung his early period with Mercury Records, Rah extends his voice even further than his previous album "We Free Kings" and starts to exhibit more humor through his playing and interpretations of originals and standards. And the man cooks! His multi-reed playing is astonishing! Yet, what could be taken as showy or novel, is some of the most melodic, lyrical and swinging music around. And the company! Herbie Hancock, Andrew Hill, Wynton Kelly, Roy Haynes, etcetera, is very fluid and challenging.

Recorded in 1973, this is yet another criminally underappreciated Rahsaan Roland Kirk recording from the last phase of a remarkable career. This is perhaps Kirk's most experimental recording in that it involves his most involved performing on multiple horns and flutes including his infamous and wonderful nose flute and working with drones on a more surface level. Given Kirk's system of playing three horns at once, the drone horn was always a part of his sonic architecture.

The expanding musical universe of Rahsaan Roland Kirk continues its orbit on Domino. While always true to his exceptional talents, Kirk's previous efforts are somewhat derivative when compared to his later and more aggressive sound. On Domino, the genesis of his more assertive presence is thoroughly evident. Additionally, this disc features several impressive originals, as well as the most distinctly branded cover tunes to date, including the intense bop of the title track. As evidenced throughout the album, Kirk's compositions are becoming denser and more involved. "Meeting on Termini's Corner" an ode to the legendary Five Spot club mimics the off-kilter rhythms of Thelonious Monk.

Pithecanthropus Erectus was Charles Mingus' breakthrough as a leader, the album where he established himself as a composer of boundless imagination and a fresh new voice that, despite his ambitiously modern concepts, was firmly grounded in jazz tradition. Mingus truly discovered himself after mastering the vocabularies of bop and swing, and with Pithecanthropus Erectus he began seeking new ways to increase the evocative power of the art form and challenge his musicians (who here include altoist Jackie McLean and pianist Mal Waldron) to work outside of convention.

As difficult as it is to adequately present such a talented, driven, quirky and unique musician, this compilation tries. Drawn from his Mercury and Verve recordings, mostly from the first half of the '60s, this worthy release eschews his later, more experimental work on Atlantic. Whether playing two or three woodwinds simultaneously, wailing on flute or whistle or employing his own stritch or manzello, he sounds like no one else. He gets sympathetic backing throughout, particularly from a wide assortment of pianists who include Herbie Hancock and Horace Parlan. Nine of the 14 tracks are written by the frontman himself, including "Serenade to a Cuckoo," which Jethro Tull covered on its debut. It's easy to see why Ian Anderson was impressed by Kirk's flute work. ~ Roland Kirk's Finest Hour Review by Mark Allan

One of the endearing qualities about this record is that it’s maintained its mysteries. Decades later, maybe it’s time to unlock a little of the origin story.

The tenor sax was to Rhythm & Blues-hits of the 40s and 50s, what the guitar went on to become to RocknRoll. Put on an R&B-single from that era and you will most likely hear a tenor sax break or solo. Eventually, the tenor players stepped out to make records under their own name. These Soul Tenors were expressing themselves by honkin, shoutin, riffin, riding high on a single note or barking out a guttural howl, as Ted Gioia described it in The History of Jazz, all the while, carrying the moan in their tone, according to Cannonball Adderley…
