Japanese original greatest hits album from ABBA includes 40 tracks total selected based on a fan vote. Comes with a booklet with message from the members to fans in Japan. Universal Music Japan are celebrating ABBA's 40th Anniversary in their own way with the release of a unique compilation 40/40 The Best Selection. Japan are arguably doing something more interesting since 40/40 The Best Selection has a track listing that was based on votes from over 9,000 Japanese fans.
Perhaps not unexpectedly Dancing Queen came top and while it’s still a very mainstream selection (see track listing below) the 40-track two-CD collection does at least include Slipping Through My Fingers which there was no place for across the three discs of the new ABBA Gold.

To celebrate ABBA's 40th anniversary, Polydor released the 2012 compilation The Essential Collection, which includes 39 songs by the Swedish hitmakers and a 12-page booklet. The two-CD album is basically an update of the 2002 compilation The Definitive Collection, adding several Japanese A-sides to that collection's track list ("Bang-a-Boomerang," "That's Me," "One Man, One Woman," and "Happy New Year"). The Essential Collection is also available as a DVD with 36 music videos and promo clips (including two previously unreleased Spanish videos) and as a limited deluxe edition with both CDs and the DVD in a hardcover book containing a 24-page booklet with liner notes by ABBA biographer Carl Magnus Palm.

ABBA remains the most successful act ever to come from Scandinavia. The group topped worldwide charts during the mid-to-late 1970s and gained widespread airplay during the early 1980s, selling many hit singles and albums. Indeed, the group sold "more than 350 million records, all but one being self-penned." They were the first act from the European continent to become a regular fixture on the charts of the anglophonic world (Britain, North America, and Australia), and their success subsequently opened the doors for many other European acts. ABBA was a Swedish pop music group formed in Stockholm in 1972, consisting of Anni-Frid "Frida" Lyngstad, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Agnetha Fältskog. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, and they topped the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1983. ABBA gained international popularity employing catchy song hooks, simple lyrics, sound effects (reverb, phasing) and a Wall of Sound achieved by overdubbing the female singers' voices in multiple harmonies. The early Polydor CDs are considered superior sounding to the later remasters, which are often shrill and/or highly compressed.

ABBAmania is a tribute album to Swedish disco-pop band ABBA, released in 1999. It followed an ITV programme of the same name and featured various British and Irish artists covering ABBA songs, except for "I Know Him So Well", which originated from the musical Chess, though it was written by ABBA songwriters Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.
