According to the obituary written by his son Carl Philip Emmanuel and his former pupil Johann Friedrich Agricola, Johann Sebastian Bach composed five Passions, including “one for two choirs” (the St Matthew Passion). However, only two of them have survived in their entirety. A third one, the St Mark Passion, has given rise to various reconstructions, and the last two, if they at all existed, are irretrievably lost. Of the two Passions that have come down to us, the St John Passion was the first to be composed; Bach had it performed for the first time in the St Nicholas Church less than a year after taking up his post in Leipzig, on 7 April 1724 (he had taken the liberty of announcing it to the St Thomas Church, which earned him a reprimand; he got away with a somewhat ironic letter of apology).
The box-set traces the history of Archiv from 1947, when the first recordings were made (Helmut Walcha playing Bach organ works), to a bonus CD featuring selections from the new 2013 albums mentioned above. Martin Luther, the great German Reformer, has had not only a lasting theological effect; he also had a big influence on the musical development of his time. He demanded the use of the German language for hymns sung at church services, and thereby created the basis for the early “German Lied”. Sabine Lutzenberger, a fine early music expert, and her Per-Sonat ensemble present a broad overview of sacred and secular songs from this era. Soprano Sabine Lutzenberger has been a member of the “Ensemble for Early Music Augsburg) for years, and is a pioneer of medieval singing. She founded Per-Sonat in 2008, and has performed in most of the well-known festivals of Early Music in Europe and beyond. Her repertoire spans the 9th to 17th centuries, with an additional focus on contemporary music.
Constantly in search of eclectic and meaningful programmes, the soprano Anna Prohaska here celebrates ‘life in death’. An ambitious programme, conceived with Robin Peter Müller and his ensemble La Folia, which takes us on a journey across the centuries and through many different countries, with French chansons of the Middle Ages (including one by Guillaume de Machaut), seventeenth-century Italian pieces by Luigi Rossi, Francesco Cavalli and Barbara Strozzi, German composers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries (Dietrich Buxtehude, Christoph Graupner, Franz Tunder) and the English luminaries Henry Purcell… plus John Lennon and Paul McCartney. A musical and spiritual quest that even takes in a detour to North America with a universally known song by Leonard Cohen.
