John Eliot Gardiner C’est un des principaux acteurs du renouveau qui souffle si fort sur la musique des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles depuis une cinquantaine d’années dans le monde. Petits effectifs, instruments anciens ou recopiés, recherche des articulations et des modes de jeu en s’aidant des traités d’interprétation des époques concernées, telles sont les préoccupations des musiciens historiquement renseignés. C’est en 1964 déjà que John Eliot Gardiner crée le Monteverdi Choir. Il a tout juste 20 ans et sort de ses études d’histoire et d’arabe au King’s College de Cambridge. Il a travaillé en parallèle la musique avec Thurston Dart, un des pionniers de la musique ancienne en Angleterre, et est venu deux ans à Paris auprès de Nadia Boulanger ce qui a fait de lui un francophone, et un francophile, averti.

This massive new reissue from Eugene Ormandy’s stereo discography collects all the Columbia Masterworks recordings he made in Philadelphia between the early 1960s and early 1980s. Sony Classical’s new 94-CD box set once again demonstrates what noted critic Jed Distler, reviewing the previous instalment of this ambitious project “The Columbia Stereo Collection 1958–1963” in Gramophone’s December 2023 issue, characterized as “the Philadelphia Orchestra’s brilliance and versatility as well as Ormandy’s unflappable consistency and habitually underestimated interpretative gifts”.

To mark the 150th anniversary of Bizet's death and the premiere of his immensely popular Carmen, Alpha Classics and Le Palazzetto Bru Zane now pay tribute to Célestine Galli-Marié, the singer who created the title role. A remarkable actress and singer, she created sixteen roles in fifteen years at the Opéra-Comique, including Ambroise Thomas’ iconic Mignon and Jacques Offenbach’s Fantasio. Eva Zaïcik is delighted to take on the roles created by such a colourful artist: ‘Célestine embodied a certain idea of artistic and feminine rebellion. John Nelson, who left us on April 3, was undoubtedly the greatest specialist of Berlioz’ vocal works. The monumental cycle he started at the baton of the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg, including Les Troyens, La Damnation de Faust and Roméo et Juliette (to which can be added the former Benvenuto Cellini, Béatrice et Bénédict, Requiem and Te Deum recorded for with other orchestras) is an absolute discographic landmark. We will unfortunately never hear the missing parts whose recording was scheduled for later this year.
