Developed as a primary medical training resource and field guide for the Special Operations Command, the Special Operations Forces Medical Handbook defines the standard of health care delivery under adverse and general field conditions. It emphasizes acute care in all its forms (blunt and penetrating trauma, poisonings, infestations, parasitisms, acute infections, hyper and hypothermia, high altitude and decompression sickness and much more) as well as general medicine and sanitation practiced under primitive conditions. It is the work of 80 contributors both from the military and civilian practice. In general topics are covered in a consistent two page format. It is heavily illustrated with color for quick identification of dermatologic conditions, insect bites and stings and exposure problems.

Note: This is not the original SPEC OPS medical handbook which has been out for years but a newer more accurate and huge one at 600+ pages.

The “Basic Medical Skills” course at the Institute of Surgical Research is designed to teach monitoring skills. By definition, monitoring is the continuous or repeated, regular observation of a chosen characteristic of an object at con- stant sites by standardized methods. In medicine, monitoring may be defined as the interpretation of all collected and available clinical data in order to help with the recognition of present or future mishaps or unfavorable system condi- tions in time. In this sense, a cross-section of vital data should be obtained and analyzed in each case; accordingly the technique and methodology (the “skills”) of the analyzer are critical. Further important goals of the course are to foster skills-based knowledge and to broaden the correlation of physiology and anatomy to cover acute clinical care. In line with this, we utilize a student-oriented teaching methodology which is strongly based on self-education. Emphasis is placed on procedures, critical thinking and assessment of skills to support a career choice in those medical specialties in which decision-making or “problem-solving” is critical.

CURRENT Diagnosis & Treatment: Critical Care delivers authoritative and clinically focused guidance in a concise, find-it-now format. Following the trusted LANGE approach, it includes a review of the etiology, relevant pathophysiology, and clinical symptoms as a prelude to diagnosis and treatment. Coverage includes everything from renal failure and surgical infections to coronary heart disease. There is a strong emphasis on evidence-based medicine throughout.
