"American Tunes" is the final recording from New Orleans jazz and R&B pianist Allen Toussaint. It was produced by Joe Henry and includes music from a 2013 solo session at the pianist's home studio in New Orleans and an October 2015 session featuring musicians Bill Frisell, Charles Lloyd, Greg Leisz, Jay Bellerose, and David Piltch, with special guest vocalist Rhiannon Giddens and pianist Van Dyke Parks, recorded in Los Angeles the month before Toussaint died. The album title is taken from the 1973 Paul Simon song "American Tune", which Toussaint performs on the album. Also included are songs written or recorded by Toussaint, Professor Longhair, Duke Ellington, Bill Evans, and Fats Waller.

No one can deny that the Mississippi River has produced the single most important root source of modern popular music- from it’s source to the delta it has flowed with the Blues. The whole region is known for it’s rich soil and the many plantations where the black population toiled in extreme poverty, the music that was born of this environment could only be called ‘the Blues’. With the emergence of new recording technology in the late 1920’s, many upcoming record labels sent their talent scouts south on field trips to make recordings or invite these artists to travel to Northern cities to make ‘race records’ that illustrated forever the endurance and artistry of a subjugated people……Once again the Viper label has unearthed many rare hidden gems that speak as loudly today as back when they were recorded .

Matt Scullion is one of the most respected singer/songwriters to come out of Australia in recent years with a swag of hit songs to his credit. Matt’s sound is definitely his own, but his influences vary from The Eagles to Ryan Adams to Bruce Springsteen to Steve Earle with a little bit of James Taylor thrown in for good measure – sounding like none of them, but channeling all of them. He has written with the best and had his songs recorded by the likes of Cold Chisel, Lee Kernaghan, Travis Collins, Sara Storer, Adam Harvey, The Viper Creek Band, Tania Kernaghan, Drew McAlister, Amber Lawrence, Troy Kemp, The Wolfe Brothers and Jayne Denham to name but a few, with 16 of those songs going to the number 1 position on the country music charts.
