Aerosmith are considered one of America's biggest rock bands coming out of Boston in the early seventies. Much like the Rolling Stones who spin on the twin axis of guitar and singer it is the same for Aerosmith. Vocalist Steve Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry led the band from the early days through until the late seventies when despite massive commercial success the band was splintering due to a mixture of abuse, bad management and general malaise Joe Perry left the band to form his own band the Joe Perry Project. The band continued however drafting in a replacement in Jimmy Crespo.

The 2005 release Gold is a repackaging of the 2001 double-disc collection Young Lust, bearing a different title and cover but the same 34 songs as the previous release. While Young Lust had more distinctive, arguably more attractive, cover art – the new compilation fits into the overall look of Universal's Gold series, which is meant to be a thorough complement to their budget-line 20th Century Masters series – that's the only difference between the two compilations, so it's only useful to fans who didn't already pick up the earlier set. And for those fans, this remains a pretty good, but not perfect, overview of latter-day Aerosmith, containing hits, album tracks, concert favorites, rarities, non-LP B-sides, and cuts only available on compilations… ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Aerosmith's 1991 three-CD box set Pandora's Box has just about everything you could possibly want: hits, demos, rarities, live material, key album tracks, and a booklet packed with classic photos, a bio, and the bandmembers' remembrances of all the tracks. Since the set was released by Columbia, none of their material from the mid-'80s through the early-'90s is featured (Done With Mirrors, Permanent Vacation, and Pump). But the '70s was when this legendary band was at their most raw and rocking best, and Pandora's Box is a superb overview of the group's work from their first self-titled album up until 1982's Rock in a Hard Place. Also included is solo material from Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, as well as an early track from Steven Tyler when he fronted a band called Chain Reaction in the '60s.

Disc 2 is the 10 songs an incomplete version of Central Park 1975 concert taken from King Biscuit Flour Hour FM Broadcast (This track order is from the January 1991 re-broadcast). It has an excellent raw sound with numbers from their new Toys in the Attic album including their new single, Walk This Way which had been released in the USA the day before.
