The preeminent R&B singer of the 1970s, Al Green specialized in smooth soul that found common ground between the carnal and spiritual. Green's sensual falsetto found its match in the tight, immaculate Memphis funk shepherded by Willie Mitchell, the head of Hi Records who signed the Grand Rapids, Michigan singer after "Back Up Train" broke out of its regional hit status in 1967. With Mitchell behind the boards, Green released a series of albums that showcased how he developed into an exceptional interpreter of modern standards – their first big hit was a transformation of the Temptations' "I Can't Get Next to You" in 1970 – and distinctive songwriter, penning or co-writing such classics "Tired of Being Alone," "Let's Stay Together," "I'm Still in Love with You," "Call Me (Come Back Home)," and "Here I Am (Come and Take Me)," songs that defined the sultry soul of their era and acted as a foundation for the quiet storm to come.

Returning to the formula of his classic Hi albums, Al Green assembled a fine collection of originals and covers for Truth N' Time. Although Green is in good voice, and his version of "Say a Little Prayer" is impressive, the album feels a bit like a holding pattern, simply repeating ideas that were more fruitful the first time around. Given the generally listless nature of Truth N' Time, and the way Green sounds vaguely uninterested in the material, it's not a surprise that it was his last secular record for a very long time.

Prior to this album, Al Green never had a number one song. The title track, "Let's Stay Together," achieved that status and held it for nine consecutive weeks. Green's ingenuity produced one of the all-time classics, which has the bounce of a dance cut and the passion of a ballad. The dynamic soul singer's whispers, animated cries, and riffing enhance his already stirring delivery. This album was sold on the strength of the title track as there were no other selections to grace the Billboard charts. However, this album includes the timeless gem "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" and lesser-known beauties like the exulting "Judy," the cookin' testimonial "I Never Found a Girl," and the soothing blues effort "It Ain't No Fun to Me." The Arkansas native and his creative partner Willie Mitchell season these selections with lucid rhythm arrangements complemented by the faint strums of a guitar and brawn, unchiding horns.
