Daughter of Swords' 2019 debut, Dawnbreaker, delivered excellent, deceptively simple folk music that relied heavily on the guitar and vocals of Alex Sauser-Monnig. Listeners who fell in love with it may have expected more of the same on its follow-up. The North Carolina singer-songwriter's voice is just as prevalent and essential on Alex, but overall, Sauser-Monnig reaches less for soul-stirring acoustic and more for eye-opening pop. Amelia Meath, her former Mountain Man bandmate (and Sylvan Esso frontwoman), contributes production, vocals, writing and instrumentation, and longtime friends/collaborators like Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak) and TJ Maiani (Weyes Blood) also lend a hand. "Alone Together" immediately sets the tone with a burgeoning synth and a vocal pattern not heard on Daughter of Swords' earlier work.

A pleasing singer in her mid-twenties, Alex Pangman loves the music of the 1920s and '30s. For her second recording for the Canadian Sensation label, she performs 13 vintage obscurities plus a lone standard ("Prisoner of Love") and her own "Melancholy Lullaby." Although her voice is small, it is personable and she digs into the lyrics of such early gems as "Mama's Gone Goodbye," "I Had Someone Else Before I Had You," "Through the Courtesy of Love," "Concentratin' on You," and "Careless." Particularly intriguing are the four separate groups that the singer uses. Her Jazz Manouche is a quartet with trumpeter Chris Whitely, two acoustic guitars, and bass. As drummer Alex Kautz sees it, there are two parts to his musical brain: the Brazilian side, developed while growing up in São Paolo, and the jazz side, which came later, opening his ears to a wide world of musical possibilities. Those two approaches developed separately for Kautz and were initially fueled by different inspirations. Upon moving to New York City in 2007, though, he found a musical community that encouraged both, soon pushing him to new heights. “New York makes you find your uniqueness as a musician,” Kautz explains. “You really need to find a voice to fit. The Dutch singer/songwriter Alex Roeka was born in Ravenstein, The Netherlands and was sent to the boarding school at age nine. At age ten he heard Little Richard sing "Long Tall Sally", and that became one of the triggers to his musical career. When he was about fifteen years old he read poems by Nijhoff, Van Ostaijen, Slauerhoff and Lucebert which brought a naive fascination with poetry in motion. During a Christmas break he fell hopelessly in love with an unattainable girl and, in the closed world of boarding school, that grew to a kind of obsession. He taught himself to play guitar and joined the school band. After high school he went to study psychology in Nijmegen, but after achieving the exam he left to sea…………

William Alexander "Alex" Chilton (December 28, 1950 – March 17, 2010) was an American songwriter, guitarist, singer and producer, best known as the lead singer of the Box Tops and Big Star. Chilton's early commercial sales success in the 1960s as a teen vocalist for the Box Tops was not repeated in later years with Big Star and in his indie music solo career on small labels, but he drew a loyal following in the indie and alternative music fields, and is often cited as an influence by many mainstream rock artists and bands.
