The master of the piano must surely be Frédéric Chopin. Every one of his compositions includes the piano in some form, yet within his oeuvre there is still an exciting variety of music to be found. Chopin made the solo piano form into an art, extensively developing various styles – including the piano sonata, waltz, polonaise and impromptu – and heavily popularising others for the first time, such as the Polish mazurka, the form he often chose to express his nationalism.

Vlado Perlemuter's association with the piano music of Ravel contributed considerably to his international celebrity - and yet at the same time it obscured the scope of an art that also resonated closely with the musical worlds of Chopin, Fauré, Debussy, and indeed with Schumann, Beethoven, Liszt and Mozart. The sobriety and reserve of Perlemuter's playing were often taken for coldness by a public that proved to be more sensitive to the flamboyance of an Alfred Cortot or a Samson François than to the poetry of an art made up of the tension of self-effacement before the ineffable quality of the work. However, his peers were not wrong, from Arthur Rubinstein to Yehudi Menuhin, from Dinu Lipatti to Henri Barda, from Pierre Boulez to Claudio Arrau.

Michel Dalberto first came to prominence when, between 1975 and 1978, he won the 1st Mozart Competition in Salzburg, the Clara Haskil Prize in Vevey (Switzerland) and 1st Prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition (whose previous winners include Radu Lupu, Murray Perahia or Andras Schiff). When he was 12, he was introduced to Vlado Perlemuter, a favourite pupil of the late Alfred Cortot, and entered his class at the Paris Conservatoire where he completed his studies in nine years.

Gifted Chinese pianist Yuja Wang debuts on DG’s roster with an album featuring compositions by Chopin, Ligeti, Liszt, and Scriabin. Yuja Wang chooses pieces that, in her judgment, are refreshingly atypical of the customary musical perspectives of these composers. Exceptional artistry, technical perfection, and a rare ability to evoke an uncommonly vivid palette of rich colors from the instrument characterize Yuja Wang’s pianism.

Born in Granada in 1934, Antonio Ruiz-Pipó learnt the guitar in his youth but trained as a pianist in Barcelona, where he was taught by Frank Marshall, doyen of the Spanish piano school made famous by Alicia de Larrocha. Further study in Paris refined Ruiz-Pipó’s compositional technique, and he taught at the École Normale from 1977 until his death in 1997.
