Considered by many fans and critics alike to be Wayne Shorter finest album, "The All Seeing Eye" is a fabulous spiritual study which could be building blocks for his future projects such as Weather Report. Originally released in 1965 and continues to be revered and praised "The All Seeing Eye" featured an incredible line up of young talent that would turn into legends of the jazz scene. The title track and "Genesis" being standouts from the session; but also the album features Wayne Shorter's brother Alan on flugelhorn on the phenomenal final track "Mephistopheles". The piece was also written by Alan. "The All Seeing Eye" was another of a large selection of albums Shorter would record in a short and highly prolific time period.

On October 15, 1965, tenor saxophone master and composer Wayne Shorter recorded The All Seeing Eye, a brilliant and ambitiously multi-layered album for Blue Note. Shorter’s goal for the album was to use “a wider range of colors and textures” while continuing his explorations of “life and the universe and God.” Joining Shorter in his quest are Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Grachan Moncur III on trombone, James Spaulding on alto saxophone, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, Joe Chambers on drums, and, on one track, Wayne’s brother Alan Shorter on flugelhorn.

With such titles as "The All Seeing Eye," "Genesis," "Chaos," "Face of the Deep," and "Mephistopheles," it is clear from the start that the music on this LP is not basic bop and blues. Wayne Shorter (who composed four of the five originals) picked an all-star cast (trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, altoist James Spaulding, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers, along with brother Alan Shorter on flügelhorn for the final song) to perform and interpret the dramatic selections, and their brand of controlled freedom has plenty of subtle surprises. This is stimulating music that still sounds fresh.

For over a century the camera has been war's most efficient spy, keeping watch over the enemy, helping to predict enemy movements and guiding missiles to their targets. Now from its position in space camera has brought the earth and all its battlegrounds under constant and silent surveillance. But is the camera and its all-seeing eye a force for good or evil? How often has the information provided by the camera been misinterpreted, how often has it misled with deadly consequences?

A classic mid-‘60s Blue Note selection from another living legend of our music: Juju (1965) features the stellar, one-time John Coltrane rhythm section of McCoy Tyner, Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones; Speak No Evil (1966) is simply one of the all-time-great jazz albums, recorded with Wayne’s Miles Davis Quintet bandmates Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter; and its follow-up The All-Seeing Eye (1966) features some striking compositions in a highly unusual septet format.

"Every prog band worth their salt really should do a double album, shouldn't they?" asks Frost* frontman Jem Godfrey. This was one of the initial ideas as the band's songwriter/keyboardist/vocalist approached working on Frost*'s 5th studio album Life in the Wires due out on Oct. 14th, 2024 on InsideOutMusic. The album is Frost* at its most ambitious, offering nearly 90 minutes of music over 14 exquisite tracks. The album is the brainchild of Godfrey who was inspired to create the conceptual world for the album based on the group's previous release Day and Age (2021).
