Snake-Eaters debuts Fred Ho's Saxophone Liberation Front, featuring composer Ho on baritone saxophone and Hafez Modirzadeh (soprano), Bobby Zankel (alto) and Salim Washington (tenor). Darker than Blue, inspired by Curtis Mayfield's song, We the People Who are Darker than Blue, employs shifting meters (including a blues section in 11/8 and 11.5 /8), 12-tone serialism, compound meter ostinati, and Lydian chromatic approaches to orchestration. Ho's Yellow Power, Yellow Soul Suite coincides with the soon-to-be publication of the Drs. Roger Buckley and Tamara Roberts' festschrift by the same title, and includes the previously recorded "Fishing Song of the East China Sea" (originally a flute trio with bass violin on the out-of-print recording by Fred Ho and the Asian American Art Ensemble, Bamboo that Snaps Back; and the now-defunct Brooklyn Sax Quartet recording The Far Side of Here), as well as Afro-Asian adaptations of other Asian folk songs.

This six-CD set, with recordings from 1972 to 1984, includes the albums Conception Vessel, Tribute, Dance, Le Voyage, Psalm and It Should’ve Happened A Long Time Ago. Paul Motian’s innovative drumming with the great trios of Bill Evans and Paul Bley had already assured him of a place in jazz’s history books, but Motian had not considered life as a bandleader until ECM proposed a recording session under his own name. “Conception Vessel” opened floodgates of creativity. Through these recordings we hear not only the evolution of several outstanding Motian ensembles and the birth of the enduring Motian/Frisell/Lovano trio, but also the growth of confidence of a unique jazz composer. In Paul’s music, memories of Turkish and Armenian melodies he had heard as a child were filtered through a love of jazz.

On the heels of two very intriguing CDs (Painter's Spring and Mayor of Punkville), luminary bassist William Parker let loose another for 2000 on his own Centering Music label. O'Neal's Porch, a tribute of sorts to Parker's late uncle, features a quartet with Rob Brown on alto sax, Lewis Barnes blowing trumpet, and Hamid Drake, Parker's compatriot since 1998, banging drums. While Brown and Barnes are familiar playing with the bassist (both have performed in his large ensembles), Parker and Drake comprise the best rhythm section in jazz; together, they should go down in the history books as one of the most fruitful and interesting musical relationships this side of Ellington and Strayhorn, Diz and Bird, and Miles and Trane.

The great alto sax player Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and his cornet player brother Nat first recorded together for Savoy in 1955. And it is those "Summer of '55" sessions that form the basis of this double cd collection.
The Adderley Brothers went on to produce the massively popular jazz hits "Mercy Mery" and "World Song" plus classic albums such as "Nippon Soul". "Cannonball" Adderley developed a considerable career as an alto player in his own right, and his abilities as a player are quite clearly demonstrated on this double cd of mid-fifties recordings. He later went on to record albums under his own name with the pianist Bill Evans and of course "Kind of Blue". This Miles Davis album now ranks as the best selling jazz album of all time, and "Cannonball's" contribution to its success is legendary…

The first million-selling jazz album in history. With Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, bassist Eugene Wright, and drummer Joe Morello, "Time Out" is one of the best-loved records in jazz. Upon its release, the LP reached number two in the U.S charts and stayed there for more than three years. "Take Five", with its 5/4 “Take Five rhythm” became an instrumental jazz staple and a surprise radio hit, entering the record books as the first million-selling jazz instrumental single on the Billboard Hot 100. “Blue Rondo à la Turk” also became an instant classic.
