Miss America, created by Otto Binder (co-creator also of Mary Marvel and Supergirl) and Al Gabriele, was a minor character compared to her Golden Age Marvel contemporaries: The Human Torch, Toro, Captain America, and Namor, The Submariner. Little is revealed about Miss America beyond the fact that she’s super strong (although not on Namor’s level), that she can fly, and does radio stories about various war-time topics, along with the fact that she’s engaged to The Whizze, a character with similar powers, as well as a similar costume, to DC’s The Flash. Overall, is a fun read, and pays tribute to an important part of the backbone of U.S. Industry during World War II, the countless “Rosie’s” (“Rosie the Riveter,” immortalized by Norman Rockwell, was the image of the U.S. Government’s motivational and propagandistic campaign during World War II to inspire young women, mostly of middle class standing, to go to work in the many airplane factories, shipyards, and converted automobile plants, which were making tanks and other mobile and motorized personnel carriers and war machines.) who kept America supplied during the war.

It's hard to keep a good man down and, well, practically impossible to keep a superhero dead. Remember when Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, was killed in March 2007 by the shot heard 'round the world, especially if you live on the pop-culture planet inhabited by fanboys? Here's today's newsflash: He's feeling much better. On July 1, just in time for Independence Day, Marvel Comics released the first of a five-issue arc called , written by Ed Brubaker (the star scribe who killed Cap off in the first place and was also behind the compelling "Criminal" series and a memorable run of "Daredevil") and drawn by Bryan Hitch (the British artist who was co-creator of "The Ultimates" and "The Authority"). There are several variant covers available--and for this scan it's by Alex Ross--which, incidentally may be used by some to get around the no mirrors rule.

Continued from Tales of Suspense issue 99. Tales of Suspense was one of several horror-like anthologies that Marvel was publishing in the early 1960′s, but just like its counterpart Tales To Astonish, after nearly one hundred issues the series changed its name, after it already went a completely new route featuring characters such as Iron Man and Captain America instead of horror stories. So it was that in 1968, the series became Captain America Volume 1 with its hundredth issue. Captain America ran on for three more decades much like its Incredible Hulk counterpart. The series concluded with issue 454, when the series was relaunched as Captain America vol. 2. After issue number 50 of Captain America vol. 5, that series returned to its original numbering started here in Volume 1, celebrating it’s 600th issue.

"The first in a series of specials covering the length and breadth of the larger-than-life legend of Captain America, as told by the industry’s leading experts in the field!" So goes the solicitation for this series of one-shot specials focusing on Captain America, an unabashedly patriotic superhero who first made his appearance in (March 1941), from Marvel Comics' 1940s predecessor, , and was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. He achieved the height of his popularity during World War II as a symbol of the fight against the Axis powers. This series with the long attention-getting title is definitely a tie-in to Marvel Comics' 70th Anniversary and perhaps also functions as Marvel Comics' subtextual patriotic contribution in honor of the soldiers deployed in the Wars the U.S. is now involved; whatever the aim, it has helped generate renewed interest in this iconic figure of comic book history. This brings to seven the total number of issues in this series of one-shot specials.
