Pop polymath Wilson Malone - multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, vocalist, producer, arranger - has achieved cult acclaim for his early work in the soft white underbelly of the British pop industry, being responsible for a number of highly collectable singles and albums during the psychedelic and progressive rock eras before recording the soundtrack to the 1972 British horror film Death Line (retitled Raw Meat for the American Market) and working with such storied names as Cliff Richard and Roger Daltrey. However, genuine heavyweight success didn't arrive until some thirty years into Wil's career, when he provided the striking string arrangements that underscored major Nineties hits by The Verve ('Bittersweet Symphony') and Massive Attack ('Unfinished Sympathy'). Basically these four CDs, spread over two double albums, are Toehider's second release. Confusing? Let me explain. Toehider released their debut album To Hide Her in 2008 and after that the band, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Michael Mills, guitarist Lachlan Barclay, bass player Amy Campbell and drummer Ricky Evensand, wanted to do something different so the next release consisted of twelve separate albums which were released on the twelfth of every following month. What I am holding now is the combination of twelve EP size albums gathered on The First Six and The Last Six.

Some electronic producers spend their entire careers building up a roster of instruments, legions of samples, and more gear than any bedroom studio could possibly fit. Jamie Lidell has apparently been reducing not only his equipment list to its basics, but his production style, so it includes a minimum of things that you need to program (much less plug in). Of course, that jives with his gradual blossoming as an unhinged soul singer on 2005's Multiply, which has only blossomed further for 2008's Jim, a neo-soul record that sounds like it was recorded live, in the kind of studio that each of the album's seven to eight musicians actually could fit into. Part of this is the result of Lidell and co-producer Mocky's ability to record so well that the production doesn't stand out by itself, but simply works as a vehicle for the songs…
