Up to a certain time the attention of mathematicians was concentrated on the study of individual objects, for example, specific elementary functions or curves defined by special equations. With the creation of the method of Fourier series, which allowed mathematicians to work with 'arbitrary' functions, the individual approach was replaced by the 'class' approach, in which a particular function is considered only as an element of some 'function space'. More or less simultane­ ously the development of geometry and algebra led to the general concept of a linear space, while in analysis the basic forms of convergence for series of functions were identified: uniform, mean square, pointwise and so on.

The purpose of the volume is to provide a support for a first course in Mathematics. The contents are organised to appeal especially to Engineering, Physics and Computer Science students, all areas in which mathematical tools play a crucial role. Basic notions and methods of differential and integral calculus for functions of one real variable are presented in a manner that elicits critical reading and prompts a hands-on approach to concrete applications. The layout has a specifically-designed modular nature, allowing the instructor to make flexible didactical choices when planning an introductory lecture course.

Sie soll etwa den Stoff der an den Universitäten der Bundesrepublik Deutsch­ land üblichen dreisemestrigen einführenden Vorlesung umfassen. Ich habe diese Vor­ lesung viele Male gehalten. Die Darstellung des Buches ist verhältnismäßig kurz und von konzentrierter Diktion. Das Werk wird aber hinreichend umfassend sein, um als Fundament für das Gesamtgebäude der Analysis dienen zu können. Struktur und Stoffauswahl sind durch meine eigenen Arbeiten wesentlich mitbeeinflußt. Der erste Band umfaßt die Grenzwerttheorie und die Differential- und Integral­ rechnung für Funktionen einer reellen Veränderlichen.

The first part of the volume contains a comprehensive description of the theory of entire and meromorphic functions of one complex variable and its applications. It includes the fundamental notions, methods and results on the growth of entire functions and the distribution of their zeros, the Rolf Nevanlinna theory of distribution of values of meromorphic functions including the inverse problem, the theory of completely regular growth, the concept of limit sets for entire and subharmonic functions.
