After Falling Deeper, Anathema's orchestral detour into greatest hitsville, the Liverpool band return with a true follow-up to We're Here Because We're Here. What Falling Deeper accomplished was to make the band comfortable with the string arrangements of Dave Stewart; they're used abundantly – and to great benefit – on Weather Systems (produced by Christer-Andre Cederberg with Daniel and Vincent Cavanagh). Guitarist Daniel has written a set of songs that are more daring, harmonically ambitious, and poetically sophisticated than anything he's previously attempted.

The last three years have been very kind to Anathema, this, after a well-documented period of studio inactivity from 2004 to 2009 that netted only a remake album (Hindsight) and nothing more. So with the momentum of last year’s well-received Weather Systems behind them, the Brits took to Bulgaria to record Universal, a full-blown concert film that showcases the band at their most grandiose and earnest. And since we can’t write anything about the band without mentioning their glorious early-career metal days: This should do even more to pipe down the calls for Anathema to make a sonic retreat.

I would love to be there to see the face of any new Anathema fan that likes them for their Radiohead and Pink Floyd influenced albums, when they unknowingly picked up this album. They would put the CD on and for the first ten seconds everything would seem normal as a simple keyboard sound fades in, but suddenly there would be these heavy riffs, slow pounding drums and double bass, and after a short spoken word intro, deep, guttural death metal vocals. The look on that poor person’s face would be priceless. What some might not know is that Anathema started out playing doom metal with a vocalist named Darren White.

After the mildly disappointing Alternative 4, Anathema strikes back with Judgement. Upon first listen, the music and message seem a bit mellow for these doomy metal moguls. Second listen is like a magical rediscovery of a lost art form, the art of creating simple, depressing hard rock that is so emotionally expressive that it bends one's own constitution. Quiet and introspective on songs like "One Last Goodbye" and "Anyone, Anywhere," Anathema has the ability to spew forth raw, volcanic pain on cuts like "Judgement" and "Pitiless" – the last of which contains the most heart-wrenching solo the Cavanagh brothers have ever penned.

Anathema are one of the select few bands that actually progress with each album, honing their songwriting skills to provide a better means for their musical message – but a six-year gap in the recording schedule that preceded We're Here Because We're Here still left many fans wondering, where do they go from here? Turns out, it was in the right direction. The most easily recognized change is the increased emphasis on piano, which is the leading instrument on most songs, but if this description brings the likes of Coldplay and Fray to mind, the music does not, for the simple reason that Chris Martin, let alone the horde of his mainstream rock imitators, can never rival the immense emotional charge of Anathema's music.

Three years ago, Liverpool's former power metal act Anathema issued A Fine Day To Exit, a wildly experimental change in direction from their gloriously punishing doom excesses. The set was a lushly produced nod to bands who explored the melodic fringes of dark, futuristic rock & roll – Radiohead, Coldplay. While it took off from the tempered strategies of Judgement and proved an interesting ride, it ultimately failed to captivate not only the band's faithful, but also to win any new fans; it was lost in its excesses and unclear in its direction.

An amazing EP, though the length is that of an entire album. "Kingdom" starts the album with a classic epic song that's very emotional and the guitar melodies are excellent. "Mine is Yours to Drown In (our is the new tribe)" is an excellent song and being very dark. "We, the Gods" is another Anathema classic. Being perhaps their longest song recorded, the lyrics are great and the guitar work is again, mesmerizing.

Although the British band Anathema left their traditional death metal sound behind on The Silent Enigma with guitarist Vincent Cavanagh taking over vocals duties from growler Darren White, the dark themes continue. Shifting their morbid focus from God-bashing and destruction, the chaps focus on suicide and the meaningless of life. The blistering guitars have been replaced by atmospheric keyboards making this come off as a twisted combination of Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel, and there is even some spoken poetry here.
