La Marquise de Flers, décide de marier sa petite fille, fleuron de l'aristocratie française, avec Ryno de Marigny, une sorte de Valmont romantique. Mais ce que tout le monde ignore c'est que ce Don Juan, impénitent, est depuis 10 ans l'amant et la proie d'une courtisane scandaleuse, démon de la séduction, fille naturelle d'une duchesse et d'un torero.

This masterful film attempts to recreate the mysterious girl's life. Griet, played by Scarlett Johansson, is a maid in the house of painter Johannes Vermeer, played by British actor Colin Firth. Vermeer's wealthy patron and sole means of support, Van Ruijven, commissions him to paint Griet with the intent that he will have her for himself before it is finished. She must somehow secretly pose for the crucial painting without the knowledge of Vermeer's wife…

The gentle madness of Paul Driessen is everywhere in his animated shorts — editorial, color palette, sound effects — but mainly it’s that line. For 30 years he’s been honing an affect that at first blush seems positively arthritic. Just watch the pictures move for a few seconds, though, and you’ll see grace, fluidity and tight control in those wavy outlines. His goofy and lackadaisical disregard for the niceties of human anatomy leads his characters to set out for destinations where not every body part arrives at once. His outlines dissolve in a turmoil of gaps.

The business of death provides the framework for this black comedy about a mortician's assistant who wants to marry an executioner's daughter. Unfortunately, an execution is scheduled shortly before the beginning of a major carnival, a time when many executions are halted. The bride and groom travel there, hoping the victim will be pardoned, but he is not and the groom must fulfill his duty. Although he swears he will never do another, his face tells another story, and the old executioner knows that many more state-sanctioned deaths will follow.
