Passionate about the music of his own country, Peter Friis Johansson has commissioned new works as well as worked toward the unearthing of overlooked masterpieces of Swedish music. His latest disc presents the fruits of these efforts: one older, unfinished work with a completion by Johansson himself, the two others commissions made on his initiative. All three concertos were premièred between 2017 and 2020.

This new release features world premiere recordings of piano pieces by two of Sweden's most interesting composers, twice Grammis Award-nominated Ylva Skog and Grammis Award-winning Andrea Tarrodi, performed by Grammis Award-winning pianist Ann-Sofi Klingberg. Contributions also include works by pianist Mats Widlund in two pieces for piano four hands. This is contemporary and accessible music at its best! In her composing, Ylva Skog (born 1963) intuitively blends and fuses musical styles, drawing inspiration from an eclectic range of sources including fine art and literature. It has been said that Ylva Skog stand with one leg in the tradition of Igor Stravinsky and Béla Bartók, and the other in jazz, rock and Latin American music.

The theme of our 22/23 season, “Werden” (Becoming), is taken directly from Mozart’s splendid Symphony No. 39. This work is associated with concepts such as freemasonry, virtuosity, nature, mystery and enlightenment. But why? Can music really express these ideas, or do we merely randomly associate romantic meanings with it? How can we interpret a manuscript – hastily written in ink on parchment by candlelight in 1788? I warmly invite you to engage with the hidden aspects of this fascinating work.
