Following acclaimed performances at the Edinburgh Festival and then in Melbourne, Sir Andrew Davis’s recording of Massenet’s opera Thaïs features an outstanding cast, and exceptional performances from his Toronto forces. Written shortly after the premiere of his masterpiece Werther, Thaïs was composed for the Californian soprano Sybil Sanderson who gave the premiere at the Paris Opéra In 1894. Sanderson's performance was a triumph, but the opera itself had a mixed reception. After Massenet revised it in 1898 it went on to worldwide success in the years leading up to World War I and has enjoyed continuous and growing success in our own time.

The first thing to note about the music of Patrick Ozzard-Low is that if we let it, it will take us to some unusual imaginative regions. Initially we seem to find ourselves in the world of high modern-ism, but as we become accustomed to the air this impression quickly dissolves. Pianist Andrew Zolinsky and violist Elisabeth Smalt present two solo sonatas for their respective instruments and deliver a strong argument for the continuing existence of this traditional musical form in todays musical language. Patrick Ozzard-Low (b. 1958) first discovered the music of Jean Barraqué in 1978 when he heard Roger Woodwards magnificent recording of the Sonate pour piano.

Drummer Andrew Cyrille and his group including David Murray on tenor sax and bass clarinet, Oliver Lake on alto sax, keyboardist Adegoke Steve Colson and bassist Fred Hopkins, recorded this set during a stay in Senegal. Comprised of original compositions by Cyrille, Murray and Colson, the quintet also performs John Coltrane's "Acknowledgement" and "Resolution" sections from "A Love Supreme".

'How I Live Now' is the big-screen adaptation of the award-winning young-adult novel by Meg Rosoff, directed by acclaimed Academy-Award winning director Kevin Macdonald (One Day In September, Marley, The Last King of Scotland) and starring Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (Atonement, The Lovely Bones, Hanna) as Daisy. London based Jon Hopkins, a classically trained pianist who has collaborated with Coldplay and Brian Eno amongst others, received a Ivor Novello nomination for his score for the Sci-Fi classic, 'Monsters' and he also co-wrote with Brian the music for 'The Lovely Bones'.

Lightnin' Hopkins' plaintive, soft-rolling blues style is exemplified on "Let's Go Sit on the Lawn," "Just a Wristwatch on My Arm," "I'm a Crawling Black Snake," Willie Dixon's "My Babe," and others. Accompanied only by himself on guitar (and oh what a guitar he plays), Leonard Gaskin (bass), and Herb Lovelle (drums), Hopkins' seductive, intricate guitar picks and strums will dance around in your head long after this CD has played. His voice, which sounds like it's aged in Camels and Jim Beam, conveys his heartfelt sagas to the fullest. A prolific songwriter, Hopkins wrote every song except the Dixon tune.
