Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies in Animal Production Systems, Preparedness, Response and Recovery

Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies in Animal Production Systems, Preparedness, Response and Recovery by Ivancho Naletoski
English | PDF,EPUB | 2021 | 205 Pages | ISBN : 3662630206 | 10.4 MB

This volume explains how major nuclear and radiological emergencies (NREs) can have implications at local, national and international level. The response to NREs requires a competent decision-making structure, clear communication and effective information exchange.

Research Techniques in Animal Ecology: Controversies and Consequences by Luigi Boitani
English | 5 Feb. 2000 | ISBN: 0231113412 | 476 Pages | PDF | 12 MB

The present biodiversity crisis is rife with opportunities to make important conservation decisions; however, the misuse or misapplication of the methods and techniques of animal ecology can have serious consequences for the survival of species.

Death-Feigning in Insects: Mechanism and Function of Tonic Immobility

Death-Feigning in Insects: Mechanism and Function of Tonic Immobility by Masaki Sakai
English | PDF | 2021 | 185 Pages | ISBN : 9813365978 | 6.6 MB

This book examines the mechanisms and functions of tonic immobility, the so-called death feigning behavior, or thanatosis, or animal hypnosis. The chapters cover the neurophysiological and experimental studies on insects, the functional significance of death-feigning, examination of the freezing and immobility behavior in insects through environment, physiology, genetics, and responses to ultrasound and vibration. It also covers tonic immobility and freezing behavior in fish from the perspective of vertebrates study.

Camera Traps in Animal Ecology: Methods and Analyses

Camera Traps in Animal Ecology: Methods and Analyses By Allan F. O’Connell
English | PDF,EPUB | 2011 | 279 Pages | ISBN : 4431994947 | 7.68 MB

Remote photography and infrared sensors are widely used in the sampling of wildlife populations worldwide, especially for cryptic or elusive species. Guiding the practitioner through the entire process of using camera traps, this book is the first to compile state-of-the-art sampling techniques for the purpose of conducting high-quality science or effective management. Chapters on the evaluation of equipment, field sampling designs, and data analysis methods provide a coherent framework for making inferences about the abundance, species richness, and occupancy of sampled animals.

Amazonian Mammals: Current Knowledge and Conservation Priorities

Amazonian Mammals: Current Knowledge and Conservation Priorities by Wilson R. Spironello, Adrian A. Barnett, Jessica W. Lynch, Paulo E. D. Bobrowiec, Sarah A. Boyle
English | PDF EPUB (True) | 2023 | 483 Pages | ISBN : 3031430700 | 97.2 MB

The mammal fauna of the Brazilian Amazon is one of the most diverse on Earth with over 450 known species. Bringing together more than 70 of the world’s top experts on Amazonian mammals, this book unites, for the first time, up-to-date data on the current state of knowledge on the ecology of all groups of non-rodent mammals in the Brazilian Amazon, analyses the effectiveness of current conservation programmes and identifies research and conservation priorities for the future.

Integrative Wildlife Nutrition

Integrative Wildlife Nutrition by Perry S. Barboza
English | PDF | 2009 | 350 Pages | ISBN : 354087884X | 13.91 MB

Nutrition spans a wide range of mechanisms from acquisition of food to digestion, absorption and retention of energy substrates, water and other nutrients. Nutritional principles have been applied to improving individual health, athletic performance and longevity of humans and of their companion animals, and to maximizing agricultural efficiency by manipulating reproduction or growth of tissues such as muscle, hair or milk in livestock. Comparative nutrition borrows from these tra- tional approaches by applying similar techniques to studies of ecology and physiology of wildlife.

Nomadic Desert Birds

Nomadic Desert Birds by W. Richard J. Dean
English | PDF | 2004 | 192 Pages | ISBN : 3540403930 | 19.8 MB

My interest in the behaviour and movements of birds of arid and semi-arid ecosystems began when my wife, Sue Milton, and I were Roy Siegfried, Director, at that time, of the Percy approached by Prof. FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, to set up a project to investigate granivory in the South African Karoo. Sue and I spent some time finding a suitable study site, setting up accommodations and an automatic weather station at Tierberg, in the southern Karoo near the village of Prince Albert, and planning projects. Among our first projects was a transect where we noted plant phe nology, measured seed densities on the soil surface, counted birds, observed ant activity, measured soil surface temperatures and col lected whatever climate data we could at 40 sites along a 200-km oval route. Along the way, we became interested in the marked presence and absence of birds at certain sites - abundant birds one day, and very few birds at the same site a month later. Subsequent counts along fixed transects through shrublands confirmed that a number of bird species were highly nomadic over short and long distances, locally and regionally, leading to speculation on how widespread these movements were in the arid ecosystems of the world.
