Imagine: It’s sometime in the back half of the 19th century, America. You’re sitting in the parlor of your mansion, or in the only room of your shack; things are dusty and smell like sweat and hair, no matter how wealthy you may be. You don’t own a phonograph, and you don’t know who Tony Hawk is, but you have an inkling of how good the word “shred” is going to feel when it enters the local slang. Suddenly, a tall, elegant figure with beautifully maintained fingernails emerges from some corner of the room, carrying a guitar. He says in a soft voice, “I have a transmission for you, from the coming few centuries. Would you like to hear it? I figured you wouldn’t have a dongle, so I brought my guitar.”

Formed by two relative veterans of the musical landscape in London in 1990, Curve blazed a trail with a fresh new sound during the first few years of that decade, fusing heavy electronics with layered guitars and sweetly dark vocals. The British music press was instantly enamoured, and the band went on to score a succession of critically acclaimed underground hits through a series of classic EPs and two futuristic albums. Released on Dave Stewart’s (Eurythmics) Anxious imprint, these records chart the course of a band who burned brightly but briefly in their original incarnation, taking their cues from the scene around them and creating a new sound which many would mimic (most notably, Butch Vig’s Garbage). But this is the original flavour. The real deal. Original and daring. Homespun yet worldly.

FLAC (tracks) 24-bit/48 kHz | Front Cover | Time - 32:06 minutes | 350 MB
Jazz, Electronic, Psychedelic | Label: Colorfield Records, Official Digital Download

Tap dancer Melinda Sullivan and pianist and composer Larry Goldings started collaborating in 2019—they met when they were both working on a musical about Margaret Sanger. Sullivan asked Goldings to help her record a retirement video for her father-in-law (who’s a fan of Goldings), of “Somewhere,” from “West Side Story,” and it was during this session that they bonded over a common love of musical theater. They enjoyed this first collaboration so much—Goldings on piano and Sullivan tap dancing on a little wooden square—that they kept doing it. Through the pandemic they would meet up and record new covers and improvisations and post them to Instagram and elsewhere, and, when venues opened back up, they started to play out live. They recorded their debut album, “Big Foot,” with Pete Min for Colorfield Records, and brought in guests like Steve Gadd, Sam Gendel, and CJ Camerieri, among others.

Boundary caught our ears when he was just a 19-year-old, a true genius, making music with a maturity and depth well beyond his years. Fast forward a few years we're back in full swing at Exotic HQ, and absolutely gassed to get Boundary onto the label with a transcendent LP that hits you right in the feels.
Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Boundary leans heavily on all the good stuff from early Detroit techno, UK & Japanese ambient, and leftfield techno, stitching things together with immaculate drum programming, wandering basslines, and ethereal pads. Sometimes brilliantly raw and gritty, at other times delicate and refined, this is an LP that ranges from deep, glassy ambient through to 140 bpm (and beyond!) pumpers. It's classy techno from start to finish, think Aphex Twin meets PLO Man with an early Detroit twist.

When Sean Cimino and Isom Innis were getting ready to work on what would become Acid Star, the full-length debut of their syrupy electronic rock group Peel, they started by tapping into the music that they liked as kids. That is, the music they gravitated toward before they had “any taste or judgment,” as Innis puts it.

In a strange way, this feels like a second debut, we have the same excitement and nervousness around releasing it, like it’s the first step of the band's career. Our youthful inspirations have taken the forefront on this record. We find the scene that we’re associated with overcrowded, diluted, and for the most part uninspiring. This isn’t an admission of some cocky attitude towards our ‘superior’ music, more so that we’ve been drawing inspiration from an array of misfit artists far from where you would usually pigeonhole While She Sleeps rather than the typical metalcore movement that surrounds heavy music. Each member has brought in a different perspective of inspiration so far apart in genre that it has left us with a very odd and satisfying sonic. To name a few, Kendrick Lamar, Aphex Twin, Prodigy, Fat Boy Slim, Limp Bizkit, Radiohead, Gorillaz, Bicep, Rammstein, AFI, Janes Addiction, Placebo, Deafheaven, Alice In Chains.

When his parents split, he and his younger brother stayed with their mother. Beck dropped out of school at the age of 14 and drifted around for about a decade, ending up back in Los Angeles. While playing some open-mike events, he got noticed by the little local label Bong Load Custom Records. In 1993, "Loser" was released to the world in a limited pressing of 500 copies and sent out to radio DJs across the U.S. The song became quite popular, and DGC/Geffen/MCA signed Beck in November of 1993, while giving him the freedom to work with independent labels and to make uncommercial music.

The Incredible Bongo Band was formed by MGM A&R Michael Viner in 1972 to record the soundtrack to a now virtually anonymous B-Movie entitled 'The Thing with Two Heads'. "The IBB" transformed from a loose studio collective to an instrumental pop covers consortium, interpreting classics of the day in their inimitable percussive fashion. Viner recorded them at MGM studios during downtime, assembling line-ups from whichever musicians were available at the time, leading to a unique blend of multi-talented musicians that included Jim Gordon, King Errisson, Jerry Scheff, and Perry Botkin Jr. The full bands' line-up is shrouded in mystery, but their legacy is undeniable. They spawned cult-classic records that would become a goldmine for hip hop breaks and attain sampling immortality.
