La menace qui pesait sur le monde durant la guerre froide s'est matérialisée par deux essais nucléaires : celui des Américains dans l'atoll de Bikini et, plus terrifiant encore, celui des Soviétiques au-dessus de l'archipel de Nouvelle-Zemble. Le 1er mars 1954, les États-Unis lancent l'opération "Castle Bravo" qui consiste à faire exploser dans l'atmosphère la première bombe à hydrogène au-dessus d'un archipel du sud du Pacifique. Sa puissance équivaut à 5 mégatonnes (millions de tonnes de TNT), celle d'Hiroshima ne représentant "que" 12 000 tonnes. Mais au moment de l'explosion, l'équipe de chercheurs qui a conçu la bombe réalise que celle-ci a dépassé leurs calculs : ce sont 15 mégatonnes qui ont en fait éclaté. Résultat : trois îles coralliennes rayées de la carte. Leurs cendres s'éparpillent dans le ciel à 30 kilomètres, avant de retomber sur 11 000 km² et de contaminer les populations des atolls voisins…

Echoes is a double-CD collection of some of Pink Floyd's best songs. It's also a fascinating document of the band's history. They began life as Syd Barrett's phantasmagoric plaything before clasping the wings of Icarus and ascending toward the sun on an epic space-rock odyssey, eventually turning left once they reached the dark side of the moon and burning up on reentry, crash-landing on every earthlings' home hi-fi. And it's all here 30 years of the Floyd's awesome back catalog trimmed down to two handsome CDs. It's worth remembering that, despite a fondness for pyrotechnics, Pink Floyd were never a prog-rock band.
