Based in Cleveland, Ohio, far from the cities of the historical performance mainstream, Apollo's Fire is an innovative, popular, and critically acclaimed group devoted to repertory from the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical eras. Typically, Apollo's Fire has a subscription concert schedule consisting of five to seven programs yearly, with each concert performed several times over a three- or four-day period. In addition, the group regularly tours throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Offering the kind of freethinking that develops best when it's far from established scenes, Apollo's Fire continues to push historical performance in new directions. Most of its recordings have achieved both impressive sales and critical plaudits, recording with greater frequency since the turn of the new century. In 2022, Apollo's Fire issued a live recording taken from 2018 and 2020 of Jeannette Sorrell's O Jerusalem! City of Three Faiths.

In 1996, Jeannette Sorrell and Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland-based Baroque orchestra that she founded, made a very fine recording of Messiah, but this 2010 album surpasses it in every way. Sorrell's treatment of the slow opening of the Sinfonia tips her hand about what her approach will be to the oratorio as a whole. Rather than playing the rhythm dotted, as written (ponderous) or double dotted, as it's usually interpreted by early music specialists (rigid and severe), she splits the difference and plays it as a triplet, which gives it a lovely dancing lilt. It's indicative of the exceptionally light touch and punchy rhythmic vitality she employs throughout.

This album is a universal celebration of storytelling, space and folk song, realized through new works by Jennifer Higdon, Jerod Tate, and Pierre Jalbert. Higdon's In the Shadow of the Mountain (2020) is inspired by her upbringing in the Great Smoky Mountains and incorporates the sounds and colors of the area. Next is the title work, Emmy-winning Chickasaw composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha' Tate's multidisciplinary MoonStrike (2019), which honors the Apollo space program through American Indian moon legends as narrated by astronaut John Herrington, the first Native American to fly in space. French-Canadian composer Pierre Jalbert's L'esprit du Nord (2019) is a three-movement work that fuses three of his culture's folk songs with his unique, contemporary musical language.

The Mystery Sonatas by Austrian composer Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, believed to have been penned in the 1670s, remain unsurpassed for their virtuosity and extended use of scordatura, a unique tuning system that underscores different aural colours and timbres of the violin, thereby illuminating the pictorial themes of the Rosary - the processions devoted to major moments in the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary - which Biber's work depicts.

Traversing the bounds of genre and language in his songs, singer-songwriter GRAMMY nominated Omar Apollo captures the adventurous spirit that this multi-hyphenate moment in pop demands, returning with his highly anticipated sophomore album, God Said No. God Said No is Omar’s interpretation of “lo que sera, sera” which translates to “whatever will be, will be”. The phrase embodies the album with Omar’s tongue-in-cheek humorous outlook on the suffering that comes from surrendering and accepting whatever is thrown at you by life, a relationship, or lover. Omar believes his natural state is longing for love or stability, and elements of the album are about surrendering to that. The record was created with Teo Halm, Blake Slatkin, Carter Lang, Dylan Wiggins, and Oscar Santander, among other contributors. In 2022 with the release of Ivory, Apollo’s eclectic debut, his hit single and career first Billboard Hot 100 entry “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me at All)” was certified platinum, sold out his first headlining tour, and performed arenas with SZA and Daniel Caesar. Omar Apollo is a true visionary, whose one-of-a-kind pop synthesis unites listeners from all walks of life in a shared passion for rhythm and soul.

No need to worry about Apollo 440 turning intelligent in the wake of electronica's growing experimental leanings. Their third album overall, Getting High on Your Own Supply is a ride through sampladelic breakbeat that's just as mad as 1997's Electro Glide in Blue. Seemingly oblivious that even their youngest listeners could spot their samples, Apollo 440 pillage Led Zeppelin and Status Quo (among others), blending styles from trance, ska, hip-hop, dub, and disco with a tossed-off feel that's quite charming. From the breakout single "Stop the Rock" to the unabashed, old-school silliness of "Cold Rock the Mic" and a remix of last year's "Lost in Space" theme which fuses black metal with jungle breakbeats, Getting High on Your Own Supply is another dumb but infectious party album to file alongside Fatboy Slim's You've Come a Long Way, Baby.

Cleveland's phenomenal early music ensemble Apollo's Fire ought to be proud of its 2010 double-disc release of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, BWV 1046-1051, augmented with the Harpsichord Concertos, BWV 1052 and 1056, and the reconstructed Violin Concerto, BWV 1052, for this set is quite comparable to other excellent period versions on the market. Led by Jeannette Sorrell from the harpsichord, the group is vibrant and fully engaged in making lively music, so the performances are far from stodgy museum pieces.
