Winschermann's approach to the cantatas is conservative; his tempos are usually well chosen, though sometimes a little on the slow side, and his phrasing inclines towards that smooth legato so much favoured by Helmuth Rilling… Cantatas Nos. 147 and 74…were issued in 1972 and I think, on balance, they are the two which best illustrate the strong points of Winschermann's approach. In Cantata No. 74, especially, there is some fine obbligato playing from the violinist, Saschko Gawriloff, from Don Smithers (trumpet), and from Winschermann himself (oboe da caccia). The soprano, Ileana Cotrubas, has a vocal colour which suits the music very well…

The present set is the debut of Ton Koopman on the Challenge Classics label and the re-start of the series of complete cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach. Volume 13 in this CD presentation contains the third series of chorale cantatas from the second annual cycle Bach composed for Leipzig. Music criticism in the modern sense did not exist in the eighteenth century, so we do not really know anything about how the public responded to Bach's music. One of the few comments we have is in a newspaper report of Bach's first appearance in the capacity of Cantor of St Thomas's, presenting a cantata on 30 May 1723,but we learn only that it was received with approbation, even applause.

A first-ever complete recording for the organ output by a pivotal figure in 18th-century music across Europe.‘Upon so short an acquaintance I never liked any man more,’ wrote the English traveller Charles Burney, ‘and I felt as little reserve with him after a few hours conversation, as with an old friend or beloved brother.’ The young Mozart was also privileged to enjoy his friendship: ‘I never cease to grieve that I am far away from that one person in the world whom I love, revere and esteem most of all.’They are writing of (and to) Giovanni Battista Martini (1706-1784), who was referred to at his death as ‘Dio della musica de’ nostri tempi’ – the God of music of our time. Born and raised in Bologna, he took holy orders at an early age and rarely left his home city, apparently due to poor health. However, this cloistered lifestyle scarcely inhibited a mind of prodigious energy and industry. In 1758 he was made a member of Bologna’s most select academic society after presenting a paper (in Latin) on the use of geometry in music. Martini also wrote comprehensive manuals on counterpoint and music history, demonstrating an erudition which he passed on to many students who would become among the most noted composers of the day, among them J.C. Bach, Grétry, Jommelli, Mozart and Naumann.

"It has to be this concise, dynamic and progressive! Spering's … spering's practical performance considerations prove (once again) to be completely convincing in this recording", FONO FORUM praised one of the four previous releases of Bach cantatas by Bach expert Christoph Spering with his Chorus Musicus Köln and Das neue Orchester. Now Vol. 5, a triple album, completes Spering's universally acclaimed complete recording of the special cantata year 1724 / 25. The cantata "Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern", which gives the album its title, was fittingly also the cantata that ended Bach's cycle of choral cantatas.

Bach's monumental Aria and Thirty Variations in G Major, BWV 988, commonly known as Goldberg Variations, are presented on this disc alongside two shorter works by the composer - Aria variata alla maniera italiana in A Minor, BWV 989, and the partially completed Aria and Variations in C Minor, BWV 991, in the version completed by harpsichordist Alessandro Simonetto. Together, the three sets trace Bach's experience with the genre of the variations throughout the span of his compositional career: the virtuosic Aria variata alla maniera italiana is a relatively early work, from 1709; the fragment of what promised to be a complex set of variations in C minor, catalogued as BWV 991, is found in Anna Magdalena Bach's Notebook, which was compiled in 1722; and the Goldberg Variations, one of the pinnacles of the keyboard literature and possibly one of greatest artistic manifestations of the human spirit, were first published in 1741.
