This recording brings back an obscure session from the long defunct Andex label that was probably recorded around 1956. The emphasis is on Latin jazz with altoist Art Pepper, trumpeter Conte Candoli, tenor saxophonist Bill Perkins, pianist Russ Freeman, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Chuck Flores interacting with the percussion of Jack Costanza and Mike Pacheko. With arrangements by Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Benny Carter, and Pepper, the music is quite jazz-oriented if a touch lightweight. Worth investigating by fans of the idiom.

The second of flugelhornist Art Farmer's two Concord albums is the equal of his first. For this Concord outing, the mellow-toned brassman performs four standards (including "Moose the Mooche," "Three Little Words" and the title cut) along with selections from Fred Hersch (who plays piano on this quartet outing), Tommy Flanagan and Benny Golson. With fine support from bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Akira Tana, Art Farmer is heard in prime form, playing in his appealing lyrical bop style.

This double CD set includes two remastered and outstanding California sessions on one disc. The first disc reproduces a jam recorded in San Diego in March 1975 by the tenor saxophonist Harold Land. The frontline soloists are: the great East Coast trumpeter Blue Mitchell, and the fabulous West Coast saxes of Harold Land, Buddy Collette and Art Pepper; playing tunes such as 'Milestones' and 'Over the Rainbow'. The second disc includes the five titles recorded in concert at the legendary Pasadena Civic Auditorium, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Charlie Parker's death. Obviously, the repertoire was classic tunes performed by Bird ('Groovin' High', 'Donna Lee', 'Ornithology', etc), played here by an All Star quintet featuring Art Pepper on alto sax, Sahib Shihab on baritone sax, Joe Albany on piano, and Harry Babasin on bass.

After Simon & Garfunkel, one of the most successful duos in pop history, split up in 1970, Art Garfunkel became a solo artist, as well as pursuing an acting career. Garfunkel's pure, high tenor had been one of the most distinctive elements of the duo's music. Songs from a Parent to a Child is a charming collection of folky children's songs performed by Art Garfunkel and such guest musicians as Billy Preston and John Sebastian. The songs are light and sweet enough to appeal to children, yet there's also enough wit and musical substance to keep parents entertained, which is what makes Songs from a Parent to a Child a cut above most kids' records.

The meeting of trumpeter Art Farmer and reed king Yusef Lateef with pianist/arranger David Matthews fronting a big band is a momentous one. The relaxed pace of the set, with its reliance on easy jazz-funk (the title track) and extended funky workouts with stunning hard bop charts by Matthews on "Flute Song," makes for one of the most provocative looks at groove jazz in the CTI label's history. Farmer and Lateef were able to walk the line of sophisticated jazz and bumping funky soul with relative ease. Matthews' charts are breezy, and they rely on rhythm to form not only the backbone for the soloists but to fill up the middle space as well.
