A successful TV star during the 1960s, former "Hogan's Heroes" actor Bob Crane (Greg Kinnear) projects a wholesome family-man image, but this front masks his persona as a sex addict who records and photographs his many encounters with women, often with the help of his seedy friend, John Henry Carpenter (Willem Dafoe). This biographical drama reveals how Crane's double life takes its toll on him and his family, and ultimately contributes to his death.

Petra von Kant is a successful fashion designer – arrogant, caustic, and self-satisfied. She mistreats Marlene (her secretary, maid, and co-designer). Enter Karin, a 23-year-old beauty who wants to be a model. Petra falls in love with Karin and invites her to move in. The rest of the film deals with the emotions of this affair and its aftermath. Fassbinder tells his story in a series of 5 or 6 long scenes with extended uses of a single camera shot and deep focus.

It's been thirty years since the massacre at Tianamen Square in Beijing, where upwards of a few thousand students were killed in the military crackdown on their protests, the massacre which the Communist Party of China refuses to talk about or even acknowledge as having happened. With new official documents coming to light as well as the surfacing of other eyewitness video accounts, the seven weeks of the protest leading to the massacre are dissected in detail, it a time when China seemed to be on the brink of a new direction to possible democracy.
