Based on the author’s lecture notes for an MSc course, this text combines formal language and automata theory and group theory, a thriving research area that has developed extensively over the last twenty-five years.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 25th International Conference on Implementation and Application of Automata, CIAA 2021, held in July 2021. Due to Covid-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The 13 regular papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 20 submissions. The topics of the papers cover various fields in the application, implementation, and theory of automata and related structures.

In the world we live in concurrency is the norm .For example, the human body isamassivelyconcurrentsystem,comprisingahugenumberofcells,allsim- taneously evolving and independently engaging in their individual biological processing.Inaddition,inthebiologicalworld,trulysequentialsystemsrarely arise. However, they are more common when manmade artefacts are cons- ered. In particular, computer systems are often developed from a sequential perspective. Why is this? The simple reason is that it is easier for us to think about sequential, rather than concurrent, systems.

This book gathers selected research papers presented at the First Asian Symposium on Cellular Automata Technology (ASCAT 2022), organized online by academicians from Kolkata, India, during March 3–5, 2022. The book presents one of the most emergent areas in natural computing, cellular automaton (CA). CA is a paradigm of uniform fine-grained parallel computation which has been explored to understand complex systems by developing its model at the microscopic level. The book discusses many real-life problems in the domain of very large-scale integration (VLSI) design and test, pattern recognition and classification, cryptography, pseudo-random pattern generation, image processing, sensor networks, material science, etc., by using CA.

In the late 1960s British mathematician John Conway invented a virtual mathematical machine that operates on a two-dimensional array of square cell. Each cell takes two states, live and dead. The cells’ states are updated simultaneously and in discrete time. A dead cell comes to life if it has exactly three live neighbours.

In recent years, a discussion of fundamentally new computer concepts has been stirred up by new developments in various scientific areas. Even in the newspapers one could find articles containing evocative terms like 'Quantum Computers' or 'Molecular Computers'.
