Flesh + Blood suggested that Roxy Music were at the end of the line, but they regrouped and recorded the lovely Avalon, one of their finest albums. Certainly, the lush, elegant soundscapes of Avalon are far removed from the edgy avant-pop of their early records, yet it represents another landmark in their career. With its stylish, romantic washes of synthesizers and Bryan Ferry's elegant, seductive croon, Avalon simultaneously functioned as sophisticated make-out music for yuppies and as the maturation of synth pop…
Music for the faerie kingdom. Collected from a twelve tribe planet. Here in Avalon, we are celebrating the dawning of the new age with this specially prepared CD compilation of music that we have discovered. The music somehow describes the world's growing cultural awareness that is emerging in the environs of the legendary Glastonbury Tor - Mount Zion - the Grail Castle. The music is a fusion of both indigenous and planetary styles and sympathetic use of modern harmonic technology, which has been gifted to humanity's musical community for this very purpose…
The story of this posthumous album is that the high-quality demo tape did not please their new label that had started promoting the group in a different manner than the band was heading in another. So the band could not record it and broke-up. These 5- tracks demo tapes reappeared in the 94 4-record box-set and they were later released under the ten-working title Avalon. Producer Lester Koenig asked Teddy Edwards to assemble a large ensemble of lesser known jazz musicians from Los Angeles to record originals and new arrangements of standards. Those players had difficulty with the somewhat tricky charts, and because they were not up to the highest standards, the project was mutually agreed upon to be scrapped. Nearly 35 years later, Ed Michel came upon the tapes, assessed that the feeling and spirit in them was good enough, and had them cleaned up by editing in alternate takes spliced by audio computer to enhance the originally imperfect sessions…
"Avalon", released in 1982, was Roxy Music's eighth studio album.
In 1989, the album was ranked #31 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "The 100 Greatest Albums of the 1980s". In 2003, the album was ranked number 307 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. "Avalon" is the highest entry of four Roxy Music albums that made the list ("Siren", "For Your Pleasure" and "Country Life" being the others).
