Axe

A group of three criminals on the run from the law, go about terrorizing the local townsfolk of a small community, before descending on an isolated farm which is home to a young girl named Lisa and her paralyzed grandfather. After being sexually assaulted by two of the gangsters, she retaliates using an axe and a razor blade.

Despite the aggression its title implies, Kiss My Axe is the work of a softer, more reflective Al di Meola, who had become greatly influenced by Pat Metheny's subtle lyricism, but still had a very recognizable and distinctive sound. Di Meola's new approach was perfectly summarized when, in 1991, he told Jazz Times he wanted to be "enchanted" by the music instead of dazzling listeners with his considerable chops. One thing that remains is the guitarist's strong interest in world music – this imaginative session liberally incorporates Latin influences as well as Middle Eastern and African elements.

Axe was a hard rock band from Florida, originally formed in the late '70s by former members of Babyface. The lineup had originally been Bobby Barth (guitar, lead vocals), Edgar Riley (keyboards, backing vocals), Mike Turpin (bass), and Bob Miles (drums). Later, Mike Osbourne was added as second guitarist, and Teddy Mueller replaced Miles on drums. They released three albums of polished pomp-metal, and reached the charts with their third, Offering, but Osbourne was killed in an automobile accident in 1984. After Axe disbanded, Barth joined Blackfoot before mounting Axe again late in the '80s with help from Andy Parker, formerly the drummer for UFO.
