Johann Kuhnau owes his fame today mainly to the fact that he was Bach's predecessor as cantor at St. Thomas's in Leipzig. The 17th and 18th centuries meet in Kuhnau's cantatas, where a heavily text-bound musical language following on from the Schütz tradition is combined with Italian melodies and a late-baroque spaciousness – a combination especially delightful to today's ears. Rounding off the CD are cantatas by Kuhnau’s close friend Vincenzo Albrici.

Second release on Ondine by the award-winning pianist Anastasia Injushina features some of the lesser-known aspects of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s (1756–1791) piano music. Injushina is particularly known for the poetry and sensitivity in her playing, which makes Mozart’s music, among others, a perfect choice for repertoire for her. During the 1780s Mozart became deeply interested in Baroque music. In Vienna he took actively part in Sunday meetings arranged by van Swieten where the music of the old masters, such as Handel and Bach, were played. As a result the influence of Baroque music became visible in some of Mozart’s works which are heard on this disc. The Suite in C was influenced by Handel’s piano suites. Prelude and Fugue is a great example of Mozart’s interest in the art of the Fugue and the music of Bach. The Sonata movement KV 312 and Andante in F major for Small Mechanical Organ are among Mozart’s last completed pieces. Twelve Variations in C major on "Ah vous dirai-je, Maman" is a delightful piece based on the famous children’s song Twinkle, twinkle, little star.

Paul Tortelier, born in Paris in 1914, became very well known in Britain through his remarkable program for BBC Television in which he gave to his young students so many insights into the music and its performance in the form of a Master class. As a performer himself his natural flair communicated his enthusiasm and genius to all in the audience as well as his fellow musicians; it seemed as if the cello was a natural extension of his body and he invited, as it were, the instrument to dance with him. Whilst he had an enormous range of musical sympathies it was to the music of Bach that he always returned – no coincidence that he made two recordings of the six Suites, the first in 1960 in Paris and then nearly 22 years later in London. He said, in reply to a question about atonality, that music is like a locked box – in order to get inside it you need a key! His engaging personality and genuine love and interest in music endeared him to his many fans throughout the world and it his death at the age of only 76 was greeted with universal sadness. This 20-CD set is being released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death on July 18, 1990.

Shot with simplicity and gimmick-free acuity these two recitals were filmed early in Pogorelich’s career. Both took place in palatial surroundings, the pianist casually dressed, alone. And both find him exuding the concentrated stillness that was so much a feature of such performances, despite his reputation for wilfulness and eccentricity. He was twenty-eight at the time, seemingly infallible and playing the repertoire that made his DG recordings of the time so important a feature of that company’s output.

Louis Clark, former arranger for Electric Light Orchestra, conducted the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra playing a collection of very recognizable extracts from classical music pieces played over a continuous beat (sometimes an overtly disco fast beat, sometimes a slower and more subtle rhythm, always produced by a LinnDrum) that linked the segments together.

As is well known, the Third Reich drove many of its gifted composers into exile, to early deaths or to the concentration camps. But a significant responsibility devolved on another group, who became ‘internal exiles’, remaining in Germany, but refusing to become cultural ornaments of the Nazi regime. Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905–1963), in Bavaria, consistently kept the spirit of modernism and human commitment alive in his own work.
