Francesco Corti and il pomo d’oro continue their acclaimed series of Bach harpsichord concertos with a recording of the concertos BWV 1044, 1054, 1056 and 1057. This completes the cycle of seven “official” harpsichord concertos that Bach composed. Many of them are masterful reworkings of existing material, either own compositions or works by contemporaries, showing Bach’s exceptional skill to present musical ideas in a different light. For their second Bach recording, Corti and il pomo d’oro have chosen to work with a relatively small ensemble, in order to bring out the individuality of each melodic line.

The program culminates in Brahms’s ingenious Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel.

The programme contains Brandenburg Concertos No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5, a unique rendition on flute and oboe of the double violin concerto, as well as the breath-takingly virtuosic Badinerie for flute. The Brandenburg Concertos by Johann Sebastian Bach were presented to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt on March 24th, 1721. On her first Pentatone album, pianist Tamara Stefanovich presents a highly personal selection of solo works by Bach, Bartók, Ives and Messiaen. Influences shows how these extraordinarily original and idiosyncratic composers let themselves be inspired by the exterior world, thereby demonstrating how authenticity comes from looking outside as well as inside. The repertoire spans from Bach's embrace of Italian musical elements in his Aria variata alla maniera italiana, Bartók's incorporation of folk elements in his Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs, and Messiaen's use of Hindu rhythms in Cantéyodjayâ to the collage of marching bands, sounds of trains and machinery, church hymns, ragtime and blues in Ives' first piano sonata.

Bach’s harpsichord concertos are arguably the first in the history of music designed specifically for this instrument. Composing them, Bach aimed to adapt the string writing of Italian instrumental concertos to a keyboard instrument, while simultaneously enriching this style with typically-German traits such as counterpoint and motivic development. Francesco Corti and il pomo d’oro present concertos BWV 1052, 1053, 1055 and 1058 as the first volume of what should become a cycle spanning four albums.

Recorded at the Rachmaninov Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on March 13, 1990. Nikolai Lugansky is a Russian pianist, widely known for his insightful performances of Romantic music. A native of Moscow, he was born to a couple of research scientists. At the age of 5, he taught himself to play a Beethoven sonata by ear, and this led to taking lessons from his neighbor, composer and pianist Sergei Ipatov. Later, he attended the Moscow Central Music School and the Moscow Conservatory, studying piano with Tatiana Kestner, Tatiana Nikolaeva, and Sergei Dorensky. An active competitor, he won first prize at the All-Union Competition in Tbilisi and the silver medal at the 8th International Bach Competition in Leipzig, both in 1988, and won the second prize at the Rachmaninov Competition in Moscow in 1990. Lugansky was named best pianist in 1992 at the International Summer Academy Mozarteum in Salzburg. After recovering from foot and back injuries in 1993, he won the 1994 Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. As a concerto soloist, Lugansky has performed with Riccardo Chailly, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Valery Gergiev, Kurt Masur, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Edo de Waart, Leonard Slatkin, and many other conductors.
