Christophe Rousset plays the harpsichord pieces by the French composer Balbastre (pronounced Balbatre) as a documented interpreter. Little known by the public at large, the musician of the eighteenth century helped to perfect the forte-piano and to publicize this new instrument. Influenced by composers such as Handel and Domenico Scarlatti, masters of the vocal repertoire, he seduces by a virtuoso writing, full of effects. A sonata with violin accompaniment ends this program with a delicate touch.

The genius portraitist Maurice-Quentin de La Tour had no superior in painting the atmosphere of court and salons under the reign of Louis XV. Notably, he is to be thanked for the beautiful portrait of Jean-Joseph de Mondonville illustrating our album of the latter’s opera Titon et l’Aurore. We can hear harpsichord transcriptions of airs from Titon et l’Aurore in this beautifully clever program conceived by Olivier Baumont, designed around the legacy of de la Tour. It features a selection of "musical portraits", a genre much in fashion in the 1750s, by such composers as Balbastre, Rameau and Duphly.

Fans of harpsichord music are likely to be enchanted by A French Collection, which includes 17 pièces de clavecin from the Baroque repertoire, performed by Skip Sempé. Each piece, from Duphly's lovely Les Grâces to Balbastre's turbulent La Suzanne, is charming in itself, and taken together they form an attractive cross-section of French harpsichord music from the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Sempé has been a prominent early music interpreter, both a soloist and ensemble leader, with a long line of recordings dating back to 1990.

Powerful, elegant, and refined - In 1740, with the op. 4 of Jean-Joseph Cassan a de Mondonville, a new genre appeared on the scene in France, a genre that was to fundamentally overturn the relationship to the harpsichord - until then a continuo instrument when it was not playing alone: the Pieces de clavecin en sonates avec accompagnement de violon.
