Born on a goose farm in Pembrokeshire, South Wales, Betsy grew up wanting a career in music; however, her mother persuaded her that she would need a backup plan. In response, Betsy moved to London to study fashion, although she continued performing at open-mike nights around the city. As her studies progressed, she gained an internship with Balenciaga, a luxury fashion house in Paris. She flew back to London every weekend to perform, and eventually caught the attention of Joe Goddard, who worked with her to release a single, "Endless Love."
