No one disputes his talents as a solo pianist. This is not his first beautiful solo opus.

Recording an album of compositions exclusively for trio is a kind of homecoming for me (I hadn t done it for 13 years), with just the feeling that now was the right time to do it. I m sometimes asked whether it makes sense to continue to play in trio formation, which historically has been overused by pianists, but I admit the question has never occurred to me, and I ve never doubted the unlimited resources of this trian-gular architecture, which is still a source of shared pleasure and a potential for renewing the language.

With grant support from the French-American Jazz Exchange Program, Cuban-American saxophonist Yosvany Terry and French pianist Baptiste Trotignon present a unique and exciting program inspired by the rich and diverse musical traditions that emerged from the African Diaspora in the United States and former French colonies in the Americas. Named Ancestral Memories, the project captures the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies of the Caribbean, New Orleans and French Louisiana, re-imagined through 21st century aesthetics and a jazz sensibility.

French pianist Baptiste Trotignon and Argentinian percussionist Minino Garay (who has lived in Paris for over two decades now) have come up with a lively and fresh take on songs by Leonard Bernstein, Paul McCartney, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Parker, among others. They both met for the firrst time in South America in 2011 and have worked together on and off. The heavily percussive, South American stylings of “Maria” or “I Feel Pretty” for example give those two classics from both the musical theatre and jazz canons an exciting new twist.

For improvising musicians, the duo is the most intimate of set-ups. Two musicians, alone together, reaching out and responding to the other in the moment, create a glorious frisson. In the right hands, the result is honest and revelatory music. In jazz there is a minor but noble subgenre of piano-sax duos (think Paul Desmond/Dave Brubeck, Wayne Shorter/Herbie Hancock, Dave Liebman/Richie Bierach), and particularly of European pianists duetting with American saxophonists: witness alto sax player Lee Konitz’s absorbing exchanges with French pianists Martial Solal and Michel Petrucciani.

Because "hitting" as percussion, as the primary driving force of sound, the fundamental element of so many musical forms, their organic element and life source, has always been at the centre of most types of Afro-American music and all those derived from it. And because my love for melody, which has always made me want to make the piano sing and use it as a cantabile instrument, has never completely taken me away me from the pleasure of physically hitting the keys, with all its instinctive, earthly connotations.
