SoulMusic Records is proud to present a first-of-its-kind compilation of recordings by renowned singer/songwriter Barbara Lewis spanning her six years with Atlantic Records (1962-1968) and her brief one-year tenure with Reprise Records (1972). Known the world over in particular for her timeless classics, ‘Hello Stranger’ and ‘Baby, I’m Yours’, the Michigan-born chanteuse’s distinctive brand of sweet soul brought her much acclaim in the mid-60s, resulting in a total of five Atlantic albums. This beautifully-packaged collection, sequenced in chronological order of recording session, includes the first CD release of a number of tracks from both the 1964 LP “SNAP YOUR FINGERS (BARBARA LEWIS SINGS THE GREAT SOUL TUNES)” and the 1966 album, “IT’S MAGIC”.

The 38 tracks include 14 never-before-released recordings, featuring collaborations with Lightin’ Hopkins, the Chambers Brothers, Doc Watson, Pete Seeger, Memphis Slim and Willie Dixon, Art Hodes, and more. The extensive liner notes give insight into Dane’s singular trajectory as an outspoken and indomitable artist who, unwilling to make the compromises demanded by the music business, struck out on her own path, singing for peace and social justice.

The concert contained on this CD took place at The Santa Barbara County Bowl in the autumn of 1979, when Bob was touring in support of his militant Survival album. And the resulting film is an epochal record of a Bob Marley performance; one that stands up as being easily an equal of the better known Live at the Rainbow show filmed on the Exodus tour in 1977. For all intents and purposes, the Survival tour had kicked off on September 24 1979, when Bob and the Wailers had played a benefit concert for Rasta children in the National Heroes Arena in Kingston: 1979 was the United Nations’ International Year of the Child. At that ‘Heroes’ Park’ show, Bob introduced the audience to a pair of new songs from the imminent Survival album - “Ambush in the Night,” the story of the assassination attempt on his life by gunmen on December 3 1976, and “Zimbabwe,” in which he expressed his militant support of the freedom movement in the country still known as Rhodesia.

Ignaz’s is probably the least well-documented life of the Lachner brothers who numbered Franz and Vinzenz and who were born in Bavaria. Ignaz was a string player – violin and viola – and worked in Munich until Franz managed to secure him a job in Vienna in 1826. He composed and travelled widely, spending a period in Frankfurt between 1861 and 1875 where he conducted Wagner operas which he then cut to fit local taste. Though he achieved a degree of renown during his lifetime Lachner’s works have sunk almost without trace and I doubt whether many, if any, are now in print.

A collection of recordings by the Scottish folk singer who made the successful transition to stage musicals working with Willy Russell and Andrew Lloyd-Webber & Tim Rice. This set includes her first two big hits Answer Me and Another Suitcase In Another Hall - the latter from “Evita”, along with Don't Cry For Me Argentina from “Evita”, and the Beatles songs The Long And Winding Road and With A Little Help From My Friends which she performed in Russell’s successful show “John, Paul, George, Ringo and Bert”.
It’s a great showcase for her highly distinctive voice.

Although Barbara certainly didn't like the thought of it, she actually was part of the legendary club formed by her friend Jacques Brel, Georges Brassens, Léo Ferré, and Edith Piaf. A truly generous and humble woman, Barbara insisted on living up to her audience's expectations and was constantly questioning her success. As an artist, she achieved one of the most incredible communions with several generations of listeners…

Georges Brassens avait compris, bien avant les autres, le talent de cette « dame brune » en lui offrant une place auprès de lui à Bobino, du 23 octobre au 10 novembre 1964.
