Esoteric Recordings is pleased to announce the release of a newly re-mastered, re-mixed and expanded 3 disc clamshell box edition of the classic album, “Barclay James Harvest and Other Short Stories”. Recorded and released in 1971, the album was the third by BJH and was recorded at Abbey Road studios and was co-produced by the band and ex-Pretty Things member Wally Allen. Widely regarded (along with “Once Again”) as one of the band’s early masterpieces, “…Other Short Stories” featured such classic tracks as ‘Medicine Man’, ‘Ursula (The Swansea Song)’, ‘The Poet’ and the epic ‘After the Day’. The album was critically acclaimed upon its release by Harvest Records and was also issued by Sire Records in the United States with some remixed versions of tracks. The album also featured the Barclay James Harvest symphony orchestra conducted by Martyn Ford and arrangements by Toni Cooke and Martyn Ford.

Released in November 1972, their fourth album was mainly recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport with the epic ‘Moonwater’ being recorded with a full orchestra at Abbey Road studios. The record was their final album for EMI’s Harvest label and featured pieces such as ‘Summer Soldier’, ‘One Hundred Thousand Smiles Out’ and ‘Delph Town Morn’. Upon its completion the album release was marked by an appearance by Barclay James Harvest with BJH Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Ford on the BBC Radio One programme In Concert. This highly memorable appearance being the only professional live recording of the band with an orchestra. Aside from premiering new tracks from ‘Baby James Harvest’, the recording also featured classics such as ‘Mockingbird’, ‘Galadriel’, ‘The Poet’, ‘After the Day’ and ‘Dark Now My Sky’.

In 1966 two R & B bands local to Oldham (UK) merged to form a blues outfit The Blues Keepers. With sponsorship from a local businessman (also their manager) they rented an 18th century farmhouse where they practised extensively, gradually moving towards a progressive rock style then beginning to emerge. On turning professional the name Barclay James Harvest was adopted, and the line-up stabilised as John Lees (guitars, vocals), Les Holroyd (bass, rhythm guitar, vocals), Stuart "Wooly" Wolstenholme (keyboards, vocals) and Mel Pritchard (drums). After releasing their first single in April 1968, the band joined the legendary progressive Harvest label, quickly expanding their musical horizons, chiefly by experimenting with longer evolving song structures and orchestrations…

Released in February 1971, Barclay James Harvest’s second album was recorded at Abbey Road studios and was produced by Norman Smith. Widely regarded as one of the band’s early masterpieces, ‘Once Again’, the album was critically acclaimed upon its release and featured the Barclay James Harvest symphony orchestra and eventually attained Gold disc status.
This new expanded edition features three CDs and an all-region Blu ray disc and comprises 44 tracks. The set features the original UK stereo mix remastered from the original master tapes and also includes stunning new 5.1 Surround Sound and stereo mixes by Stephen W. Tayler, a new remaster of the 1972 SQ Quad mix of the album and a multi-channel version of the 1972 Quad mix.

Eagle Records originally released the album as a single CD, but eight months later repackaged it with a bonus disc containing four extra tracks and a computer screensaver.

This album was recorded on Tuesday the 14th July 1987 at Treptower Park, Berlin GDR and mixed at Advision Studios, London. The concert performed by BARCLAY JAMES HARVEST was organised by the GDR authorities as part of the celebrations to commemorate the 750th anniversary of Berlin. It is reputed to be the first time that a western rock band have been allowed to perform an open air concert in the GDR.
