With 1984's Discovery, Mike Oldfield seems to be back on track, utilizing the vocal power of Maggie Reilly and the drum playing of Simon Phillips to create some rather appealing selections. "The Lake" is a simply gorgeous instrumental inspired by Switzerland's Lake Geneva, the location in which the album was recorded, while "To France" is a powerful pop/rock tune based on the life of Mary, Queen of Scots. Both Reilly and Barry Palmer share the vocal duties throughout the tracks, signifying Oldfield's subtle emergence into a more pop-infused atmosphere. "Tricks of the Light" is a wonderful instrumental that relies on the keyboard to give it energy, while even so-so efforts like the title track and "Poison Arrows" come off as upbeat and inspired. Discovery peaked at number 15 in the U.K., and even though it didn't garner much attention elsewhere, it serves as one of Mike Oldfield's most entertaining releases from the decade.

"Emerson, Lake & Palmer" is the eponymous debut album of British progressive rock band Emerson, Lake & Palmer, released in 1970. The album was intended not as an effort by a unified band, but as a general collaborative recording session, and as such, some of the tracks are essentially solo pieces.
Keith Emerson contributed a series of treatments of classical pieces (such as Bach's French Suite No. 1 in D minor, BWV 812 and Bartok's 'Allegro Barbaro'), Carl Palmer provided a drum solo (called "Tank") and Greg Lake provided two ballads, beginning with the folky, extended work "Take a Pebble".
The album peaked at #18 on the Billboard 200. "Lucky Man" reached #48 on the Billboard Hot 100. On the U.K. charts the album peaked at #4.

Heavy Nova is the ninth solo studio album by Robert Palmer, released in 1988. His first album for EMI Records after a 15-year association with Island Records (both with Vinegar Joe and as a solo artist), it followed Palmer's very popular album Riptide. Heavy Nova continued Palmer's popularity with the single "Simply Irresistible", which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the U.S. The name Heavy Nova derives from Palmer's love of both heavy metal and bossa nova rhythms. The album was recorded at Logic Studios, Milan, Italy and Compass Point Studios Bahamas. The album peaked at No. 13 in the US, No. 17 in the UK and No. 15 in Netherland. The album was certified US Platinum by RIAA in November 1988 and UK Gold by BPI in November 1988. It remains Palmer's second most successful album worldwide, behind his 1985 album Riptide.
