Georg Philipp Telemann was a German Baroque composer and multi-instrumentalist. He is one of the most prolific composers in history, at least in terms of surviving oeuvre. Telemann was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the leading German composers of the time, and he was compared favourably both to his friend Johann Sebastian Bach, who made Telemann the godfather and namesake of his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and to George Frideric Handel, whom Telemann also knew personally.

He is often suffers in comparison to Bach, Handel and Vivaldi mainly because it is so difficult to know where to start with such a vast body of work. This Brilliant Classics box set makes the Telemann experience all the more enjoyable by making this selection and providing a wonderful window into the world of this great composer.

All of Fasch's music that I've heard is extremely attractive and pleasurable to listen to without being shallow. Many have said that he sounds similar to Telemann. I disagree. His harmonies are richer and more masculine without sounding plodding, and he has an excellent command of melody. He uses the woodwinds in these suites very cleverly, inserting very rich sounding interjections between the tutti sections. The suite for double orchestra is a wonderful example of his lushness of sound.

The Four Seasons' is obviously included in this box set and These works in their original form as part of the 12 violin concertos `I'l Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione' (The Trial of Harmony and Invention). `L'Estro Armonico' (Harmonic Inspiration), `La Stravaganza', ´La Cetra´ violin concertos. There are also concertos for a whole variety of instruments such as recorder, organ, oboe, bassoon, lute and mandolin as well as other, more unusual, concertos per archi, concertos da camera, concertos for diverse instruments, for stringed instruments, for viola d'amore, and many, many more. The huge range of music in this collection, which also includes for good measure the oratorio `Juditha Triumphans', the opera `L'Olimpiade, several cantatas and choral works.
