Often I utter these words, for they give me courage to endure the emotions I have found myself engulfed in. Ownership of these feelings have birthed truths that may not have lived beyond the fantasy of my denial.

On her full-length debut Discussions With Myself, Soren Bryce builds a world all her own—a sprawling dreamscape set to lushly detailed alt-pop, constructed with a newfound sense of self-possession. With her ethereal yet commanding vocals, the Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist sings of paper dolls and plane crashes with equal intensity, infusing the album with moments of bruising honesty and fragile wisdom.

I had this realization when watching my Indianapolis Colts poop the bed again in the 4th quarter: personnel really matters. Whether it’s having the right quarterback to operate a 4th down sneak (we don’t) or the right secondary who understand zone coverage (spoiler: of course not), having the right people in the right positions makes all the difference sometimes. This simple and rather obvious insight explains why the debut from newly-formed CyHra is a masterclass in melodic metal.

Even before his departure from the Temptations was confirmed, Eddie Kendricks had started working on the suitably titled debut solo venture All by Myself (1971). So, while the Temps were continuing to own the charts with the early-'70s soul epics "Ball of Confusion," "Psychedelic Shack," "I Can't Get Next to You," and "Just My Imagination (Runnin' Away with Me)," the combo's co-founder had already maneuvered his escape. The album's ultimate lasting power can be found in the ageless grooves laid down behind Kendricks, courtesy of the Detroit-based Motown house band the Funk Brothers. Luckily, All by Myself was created while the soul and sonic spirit still dwelled at Hitsville USA's Motor City headquarters. Within 12 months, the entire operation would relocate to Los Angeles, thus concluding the label's seemingly perpetual stream of classics from the self-proclaimed "Sound of Young America" hit factory.

Although Eric Martin is best-known as the lead singer of rock quartet Mr. Big, he was a seasoned music veteran before that outfit in 1988. Born on October 10, 1960, in Long Island, NY, Martin moved often during his childhood due to his father's career as an Army officer. When the family settled in San Francisco in 1976, Martin formed the band 415 with some high school friends…

Fit to Be Tied was intended to be the definitive Joan Jett hits package, and it nearly succeeds. Since Jett's Blackheart label only secured the rights to her first four solo albums (her most consistent work), the singles from the uneven Up Your Alley – "I Hate Myself for Loving You" (one of Jett's best originals and biggest hits) and "Little Liar" – had to be presented here in alternate versions. While the re-recording of "Hate Myself" and the live version of "Little Liar" are executed faithfully, they may bother fans who want the original recordings.

American Beat Records combines the Impressions' 1973 "Preacher Man" (#204 US Pop; #31 US R&B) and "Finally Got Myself Together" (#176 US Pop; #16 US R&B) the following year - on one CD providing for an interesting contrast in production styles. "Preacher Man", the more adventurous (lyrically) of the two, is message laden. And with the exception of Gene Chandler and James Thompson's musing "Color Us All Grey (I'm Lost)," Richard Tufo's productions rule. Ed Townsend produced "Finally Got Myself Together", a solid soul harmony album featuring "(I'm a Changed Man) Finally Got Myself Together," "If It's In You to Do Wrong" and "We Go Back a Ways," a smooth red-light ballad. The Impressions, who sought an identity from the time Curtis Mayfield departed until they disbanded, is comprised of Reggie Torian, Ralph Johnson, Fred Cash and Sam Gooden on these tracks.

Good news: "The Man That Got Away" is not on this tribute to the Judy Garland songbook. Yes, it's an extraordinary song, but how many versions of it do we need? Apart from that absence, Linda Eder tackles many well-known nuggets long associated with Judy Garland–or as Leslie Bricusse puts it in his fawning liner notes, "Picasso Sings Rembrandt." Eder, a belter par excellence, lacks Garland's brittle vulnerability, and so she isn't at her best on songs that require a delicate touch, such as "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart."
