Emerging from Liverpool, England in 1960, the Beatles were a seminal British group that evolved from rock/pop origins into pioneers of musical experimentation. The band solidified its iconic lineup in 1962, featuring John Lennon (vocals, rhythm guitar, harmonica, keyboards, percussion), Paul McCartney (vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, percussion), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals, keyboards), and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals, percussion) after signing a recording contract with EMI. This followed a brief period with Stuart Sutcliffe (bass, 1960-61) and Pete Best (drums, 1960-62).

As the story goes, Sessions was to be an album released by EMI Records in 1985 featuring previously unreleased recording sessions by The Beatles. The success of the Rarities compilations in both the UK and US proved to Apple/EMI that there was a demand for something different and unfamiliar. While other recordings had surfaced in bootleg form, this would have been a first but the surviving Beatles rejected the concept. They would approve of alternate takes and outtakes released ten years later, but not before the bootleggers got their first with the release of the Ultra Rare Trax series on The Swingin' Pig. Sessions represents the album that was to be but wasn't. This version also features a different take of "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Di", but does not feature the two bonus tracks commonly found on another version of Sessions. The mixes here would be tinkered with when they were used/utilized for the official Anthology series.
