Beatless Jazz

Though it's six volumes in and counting, Compost's Future Sounds of Jazz series just keeps on shining. Recruiting a cast of varied standout producers - Ian O'Brien, Fauna Flash, Tosca, Victor Simonelli, United Future Organization, Beatless - helps immensely, as does the sheer variety of productions. All are nominally jazz-based, but vary from downtempo to trip-hop to drum'n'bass with no lack of flow.

The Café del Mar is perhaps most known around the world for its chill-out music compilations. The songs are described as balearic ambient, easy listening music. The collections of the music played at the café were first sold on cassette at the end of the 1980s. In 1994, the first official “Café del Mar” CD was released, which included works by world-renowned artists. Following the great success of the first release, a total of 18 volumes of the main compilation series have been published.

Flautist and saxophonist, Chip Wickham returns with Blue to Red, his most absorbing and cosmically-charged offering to date. Soaring flute melodies, lush harp arpeggios and glistening Rhodes keys interact across six journeying, spiritual jazz compositions, leaning on a rich palette of sounds beyond borders, space and time.

Wadada Leo Smith´s latest album features "Rosa Parks: Pure Love. An Oratorio of Seven Songs,"another extended composition by Smith inspired by the civil rights movement in the United States. This new major work is composed for the iconic civil rights hero Rosa Parks (1913-2005) and performed by three vocalists, a double-quartet and a drummer with electronics. The album is released in February 2019 to celebrate Rosa Parks´ birthday on February 4.

For this, his 10th album in as many years, Tom "Squarepusher" Jenkinson is in playful mood. He has said Hello Everything is him "having a laugh" after recording several albums that were, at times, frustrating and difficult listens. This CD may divide his fans - which include Andre 3000, Thom Yorke and Flea - as some prefer his material to sound more like a drum kit and a bag of cats being kicked down a flight of stairs. On the other hand, others will be glad to hear an album brimming with tunes. Dazzling chord progressions override fiendishly intricate beats as Jenkinson combines the elation of rave with the complexity of jazz…
