One Russian equivalent of “outside the box”, as 41-year-old Moscow-based drummer Alexander “Sasha” Mashin titles his debut leader recording, is the phrase мыслить нетрадиционно (myslit' netraditsionno-“think unconventionally”). Both the literal and metaphorical usages apply to Mashin’s intentions on this kinetic date, on which he and his pianist and bassist of choice propel the flow for separate sets of original music by two of Russia’s most distinguished jazz exports — New York-based trumpeter Alexander Sipiagin and London-based alto saxophonist Evegeny “Zhenya” Strigalev. Call it global jazz with a Russian attitude.

The music you hear on this album is the result of an incredibly courageous recording session. Italian singer Anna Lauvergnac and her musical soul mate, German pianist Claus Raible, entered the studio with a well-rehearsed program, ready to start the complex metamorphosis that transforms music from an intangible vision to physical reality. For her new release Anna has chosen the most intimate and demanding of any musical line up: the duo. The dim lighting in the studio created a candle-light setting that enhanced the closeness of “being just two”.

The music is based on free improvisation and avant-garde jazz. All musicians are mixing up together all kinds of playing techniques, expressions, moods and styles – they have an unique sound, bright and evocative playing manner, masterful virtuosity and innovative point of view.

Album was recorded by Paal Nilssen-Love (drums & percussion), Felipe Zenicola (electric bass), Frode Gjerstad (alto saxophone), Kiko Dinucci (electric guitar) and Paulinho Bicolor (cuica). Quintet’s music is based on avant-garde and experimental jazz. Roots of 1960’s avant-garde jazz are gently combined with the newest tendencies and innovations of contemporary experimental music, funk, soft intonations of rock styles, modern jazz styles, cool, progressive, fusion and other contemporary jazz styles. This wide synthesis of styles helps musicians to create multi-colorful, universal and bright musical pattern. The musicians are main figures of international jazz scene – they had been improvising together with dozens of impressive and great jazz masters. Each of them is known as innovative improviser, who combines together expression, precise playing technique, emotional, suggestive and hot playing manner and sounds experiments. All together the musicians create bright, intense and evocative sound.

One of the steps to becoming a band leader is to drop your inhibitions and find collaborators who play the music that you want to make. Though he has music in his blood carrying from two generations of bandleaders before him, drummer Greg Joseph initially found it difficult to grab the reigns of his own ensemble. It took finding the right voices in Larry Goldings’s Hammond organ and Steve Cardenas’s guitar to express his joyful music, which Joseph presents for the first time on Drop The Rock.
