This CD includes the early steps of Bobby Jaspar as a jazz musician, when he started on clarinet and then tenor saxophone, as he formed the young award-winning Belgian band they called “Bob Shots” —the first in Europe to play “be-bop” back in 1947 under the guidance of Jaspar's influence, Don Byas. One year later he met Lucky Thompson onstage in an enriching experience, and he became his new inspiration. These two encounters helped Bobby grow musically in a way that would make him a success everywhere, a blend of styles that was a compromise between the turbulence of Thompson, Lester Young, Eddie 'Lockjaw' Davis, etc., and the rhapsodic style of Byas and Hawkins.

With inspiration provided by myriad jazz masters and the Los Angeles musicians she surrounds herself with, vibist Lolly Allen creates a warm, swinging, and jubilant set of music on Coming Home. Opening with Horace Silver's "The Hippest Cat in Hollywood," she celebrates the LA jazz scene that developed out of the flourishing Central Ave clubs of the '50s. Surrounding herself with revered veterans of the scene, such as drummer Paul Kreibich and pianist Tom Owens, and young, vital members of the next generation, including pianist Josh Nelson and saxophonist Danny Janklow, Lolly delivers invigorated perspectives of the quintet group dynamic. Classics like Mario Bauza's "Mambo Inn" and Dizzy Gillespie's "Bebop" are paired with Allen's originals, "Little Hummingbird" and the title cut, in a seamless blend of supple ideas and renewed approaches to traditional repertoire.

Doug Raney is a brilliant guitarist whose style is firmly rooted in the bebop and classic modern jazz traditions. He has lived in Copenhagen for more than 30 years, shortly after he first visited the Danish capital during a duo tour with his father and famous guitarst, Jimmy Raney. Living in Denmark may have decreased his visibility to the American audience, but he has created a substantial body of thoughful, emotionally subtle, and powerful jazz and recorded for the Danish label Steeple Chase as well as the Japanese label Marshmallow Records. His latest Marshmallow CD is a delight! From the opening track "Oblivion," the listner is captivated by his warm tone, impeccable technique, flowing sense of swing, and a perfect balance of lyricism and emotion.

Four different groups are heard on this compilation from the Jazz in Paris series. Although all groups were promoted as bop-oriented when they were overseas, the only bona fide bop musicians on the first two sessions are tenor saxophonist Don Byas and pianist Billy Taylor. The first date is jointly credited to Byas and trombonist Tyree Glenn (known for his work with Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong); Glenn is an effective soloist, even though he's firmly a swinger at heart. But it is Byas' big-toned solos that stand out, especially in Dizzy Gillespie's "Dynamo A" (also known as "Dizzy Atmosphere"), along with the effective comping and solos of the relative youngster Billy Taylor, who also contributed "Mad Monk"…

The music of Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell continues to reveal inner secrets, as this engaging set by dummer Paul Motian and his Electric Bebop Band shows. The group's name of the group is a function of the two electric guitars (Kurt Rosenwinkel and Steve Cardenas) and the electric bass (Steve Swallow), although the remaining members are strictly acoustic (tenor saxophones Chris Cheek and Chris Potter and, of course, drummer Motian). The arrangements are entirely respectful of the compositions, although liberties are taken with tempo and harmony. The results are more than satisfactory, if somewhat conservative, with the solos passed about generously. Motian again reveals his ability to kick and burn, as well as play sensitively, reaffirming his place among the greatest jazz drummers.

A great set of Brit jazz from the early 60s with a good set of notes. The EmCee Five were a legendary bop group led by trumpeter Ian Carr, who went onto later fame in the jazz/rock years with Nucleus – but who's playing great here in his earlier stretch, in a lineup of players that includes Mike Carr on piano, Gary Cox on tenor, Spike Heatley on bass, and even a bit of guitar from a young John McLaughlin! The sound here is quite different from Carr's Nucleus years – and even from his years with Don Rendell – much more bop-structured, with that sense of tightness that made the British scene so great at the start of the 60s. Titles include many originals by Mike Carr and Gary Cox – and tunes include "Mike's Dilemma", "John's O Groats", "Groovin At The Downbeat", "The One That Got Away", "Stephenson's Rocket", "Lefty's Tune", and "The Bridge".

This CD contains one of the best Thelonious Monk tributes that have come out since the pianist/composer's death in 1982. Mel Martin (heard here in top form on tenor, soprano and flute) leads Bebop & Beyond through nine of Monk's most difficult originals, and his arrangements (which use the versatile guitarist Randy Vincent in Monk's place) are consistently inventive. Pianist George Cables, tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, and Howard Johnson (on baritone and tuba) make important guest appearances, while trumpeter Warren Gale contributes many fine solos.
