A magnificent jazz CD with perhaps the most expressive clarinet soloist of all times. 1940-1941 was an extremely important period for Sidney Bechet. He recorded four masterpieces with Louis Armstrong, including "Perdido Street Blues", also with a group known as "Bechet-Spanier Big Four" (China-boy, Lazy-river) and finally he recorded this famous album, "Blues in Thirds" with the "New Orleans Feetwarmers". Enjoy a real masterpiece with Bechet at the clarinet and Earl Hines on piano.

German saxophonist Christof Lauer joins forces with the NDR Bigband for Petite Fleur , an album celebrating Sidney Bechet, one of the founding fathers of jazz. Bechet played the soprano saxophone like no other, and with his French-Creole-inspired compositions, he was a forerunner of jazz's openness to all musical styles. Unmistakable Bechet classics appear in an entirely new light thanks to Lauer's distinctive tone and the multilayered arrangements. Though Lauer is best known as a tenor saxophonist, the album begins with the soprano saxophone, and Sidney Bechet's typical vibrato is replaced by Lauer's intense and expressive sound.

Throughout his long career, Bob Wilber has done a lot to keep classic jazz alive. A bit misplaced (most jazz players of his generation were much more interested in bop and hard bop), Wilber (along with Kenny Davern, Ralph Sutton, and Dick Wellstood) was one of the few in his age group to stick to pre-bop music. In high school he formed a band that included Wellstood, and as a teenager he sat in at Jimmy Ryan's club in New York.

Bechet made several outstanding albums in France, mostly with Claude Luter's orchestra. On this one, he plays soprano sax much more than clarinet. The arrangements are outstanding, and the sound quality is special. No Bechet fan (or clarinet/sax fan) should be without this! Sidney Bechet needs no introduction to lovers of traditional New Orleans jazz. Like many African-American musicians, he found a deeper recognition in Europe, and so settled in France and made many recordings during the 1950's for the French Vogue label.These have now been collected, remastered and reissued on a French release by Sony Legacy.
