Beck Odelay

"Odelay" proved Beck was no flash in the pan following the success of his major label debut "Mellow Gold" and the single "Loser". The album became one of the most acclaimed and respected releases of the decade, selling more than three million copies, winning two Grammy Awards and earning a nomination for Album of the Year.

American musician, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. born July 8, 1970, in Los Angeles, California, USA. Son of David Campbell and Bibbe Hansen, grandson of Al Hansen. He was married to Marissa Ribisi from 2004–2019.
When his parents split, he and his younger brother stayed with their mother. Beck dropped out of school at the age of 14 and drifted around for about a decade, ending up back in Los Angeles. While playing some open-mike events, he got noticed by the little local label Bong Load Custom Records. In 1993, "Loser" was released to the world in a limited pressing of 500 copies and sent out to radio DJs across the U.S. The song became quite popular, and DGC/Geffen/MCA signed Beck in November of 1993, while giving him the freedom to work with independent labels and to make uncommercial music.

Initially pegged as something as a voice of a generation when "Loser" turned into a smash crossover success, Beck did wind up crystallizing much of the postmodern ruckus of the '90s alternative explosion, but in unexpected ways. Based in the underground anti-folk and noise rock worlds, Beck encompassed all manner of modern music, drawing in hip-hop, blues, trash rock, pop, soul, lounge music…

On 2005's "Guero", Beck reunited with the Dust Brothers, the production team behind his benchmark 1996 release Odelay. The magic repeated itself, yielding Beck's highest charting US album, a debut at number two.

Although the album features such traditional rock instrumentation as guitars, bass and drums, it also features organs, keyboards and indian sitars, which help lend a spacey yet organic feel to some songs. Beck's experimental space-age folk rock album done with his backup band and produced by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead).

One Foot in the Grave is the fourth studio album by Beck, released in June 1994 on K Records, an independent label. Like predecessor Stereopathetic Soulmanure, the album never charted; however, One Foot in the Grave strengthened Beck's critical reputation, arguably allowing him to break into the mainstream with Odelay in 1996. His third official album, One Foot in the Grave shows a strong folk influence that is more pronounced than on his more eclectic-style albums of the time, Mellow Gold and Odelay. One Foot in the Grave was recorded prior to the release of his debut album Mellow Gold, but was not released until after that album met with critical and commercial success.

Hailed as "a deeply natural songwriter" (The New Yorker) who "defies expectations in his own way" (Time) and "Gen X's most famous absurdist" (Blender), Beck is the single most inventive and eclectic figure to emerge from the '90s altertnative revolution. In an era obsessed with junk culture, Beck seamlessly blends pop, folk, hop-hop, indie/underground and electronica with the end result being an authentically uncategorizable musical style that nevertheless has sold millions of records and scored multiple Grammy awards.

Recorded with legendary producer Nigel Godrich in 2002, "Sea Change" remains one of the most popular and critically acclaimed albums of the 2000s. Rolling Stone Magazine declared it Album of the Year in 2002 and it reached #8 on Billboard's Top 200 chart.
