BEE GEES 1971 AUSTRALIAN BROADCAST RECORDING By early 1970, The Bee Gees appeared to be just about finished. Robin Gibb was pursuing his solo-career but Barry, Maurice and Colin Petersen continued on as the Bee Gees recording their next album, Cucumber Castle. The band made their debut performance without Robin at Talk of the Town and had recruited their sister, Lesley, into the group at this time. To accompany the album, they also filmed a TV special which aired on the BBC in 1971. Petersen played drums on the tracks recorded for the album but was fired from the group after filming began His parts were edited out of the final cut of the film. After the record was released in 1970, it seemed that the Bee Gees were finished.

In terms of hit singles and precise musical vision, it would have been difficult for anyone to have to follow-up the brilliant Spirits Having Flown album, but these industry veterans created a real gem in Living Eyes which seems to have gotten lost in the maze that is their deep catalog…

The Bee Gees released their first single in 1963, but they didn't have a hit in their homeland of Australia until 1965. It took another two years for them to crack the Top 20 in the U.K. and U.S., after which the hits came steadily until the band temporarily split in late 1969. The trio would later re-form and experience much greater success, but Ace's 2017 compilation To Love Somebody: The Songs of the Bee Gees 1966-1970 concentrates on the songs they wrote during their first act, a time when they were seen as songwriters as much as performers.

The Ultimate Bee Gees is a compilation album released to coincide with the 50'th anniversary of the Bee Gees. Though the group did not start recording until 1963 on Festival Records in Australia, they began calling themselves the "Bee Gees" in 1959 after several name changes such as "Wee Johnny Hayes and the Bluecats", "The Rattlesnakes" and "BG's". Each disc is themed with the first containing more upbeat songs, called A Night Out, and the second containing slower songs and ballads, called A Night In, though the cover art does not distinguish this theme. Liner notes were written by Sir Tim Rice.

Brothers Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb made musical history for close to four decades with their magnificent vocal harmonies and ever-evolving styles. Masters of orchestral pop, blue-eyed soul and R&B, dazzling dance grooves, and disco fever alike—as well as uniquely blended hybrids of all these genres and more—the Bee Gees delivered album classics and top chart hits throughout their enduring career. On this newly remastered edition, the amazing genetics of their harmonies shine, as does the ongoing artistic evolution that’s made them one of contemporary music’s most successful and legendary acts.

"Living Eyes" is the Bee Gees' 16th original album (14th internationally), released in 1981. The Bee Gees turned away from the disco sound that was prominent on their work in the middle-to-late 1970s with this album. However, the album was not a commercial success, perhaps due to their being so strongly associated with disco. It sold 750,000 copies worldwide, compared to 16 million copies of their previous studio album, "Spirits Having Flown", in 1979. While it did not sell well in either the UK or the US, the album itself was a Top 40 hit in the majority of territories in which it saw wide release. It would be the band's final album on RSO Records. The label would be absorbed into Polydor and subsequently discontinued.

The next to last of the Bee Gee's "old-style" albums is one of their most fully realized works, with pleasing and memorable songs from beginning to end, and for a change this time, it's the single ("Run to Me"), rather than the surrounding tracks, that suffers from predictability…
