Bergerac

An Estonian Cyrano. It is by now a well-known fact that today’s Scandinavian composers create works that are much more moderate and pleasing to the ear than those of their colleagues from the center of the European Continent – which is why composers such as Poul Ruders, Rautavaara, and Sallinen have become stars in the world of classical music.

Cyrano de Begerac is joyous, witty, a poet, a leader and filled with plenty of charisma and bravado in 17th Century France. He has only one flaw: an unusually long nose which makes him unattractive to any woman. Thus, he cannot have the woman he loves, his cousin Roxanne. Roxanne loves an officer in his army who gets tongue-tied in front of women. Who will Roxanne love? Will Cyrano ever find love? Or will he find happiness in helping the officer woo Roxanne?

A dashing officer of the guard and romantic poet, Cyrano de Bergerac falls in love with his cousin Roxane without her knowing. His one fault in his life, he feels, is his large nose and although it may have been a forming influence in his rapier-sharp wit, he believes that Roxane will reject him. He resorts to writing letters to her on behalf of one of his cadets, Christian, who is also in love with Roxane but just doesn't know how to tell her. She falls for the poetic charm of the letters but believes that they were written by Christian.

L'opera teatrale "Cyrano de Bergerac" di Edmond Rostand (1868-1918), pubblicata nel 1897, è ispirata alla figura storicamente esistita dello scrittore secentesco Savinien Cyrano de Bergerac. Si tratta di una commedia in cinque atti che narra le gesta dell'estroso e umorale spadaccino guascone, veloce di spada quanto di parola, nonché dotato di un enorme naso. Un autentico eroe romantico, dal carattere fiero e temerario, mai disposto al compromesso, che sotto la scorza burbera e la spavalderia verso i nemici nasconde del sentimento autentico. Ama infatti di un amore infelice perché impossibile la bellissima cugina Rossana, che a sua volta è innamorata del giovane cadetto Cristiano.
