The ever-surprising Jorge Rossy! The music world discovered him as the drummer in the pianist Brad Mehldau’s trio for a decade, and with whom he contributed to profoundly reinventing the “art of the trio” in one of the most important jazz groups of the time. Yet it was initially as a trumpeter that Jorge Rossy had been admitted as a student at the celebrated Berklee College of Music in Boston a few years earlier, and which had allowed him to join the elite ranks of world-class jazz musicians. Later, after leaving Brad Mehldau’s trio and back in his native Barcelona, the decision of the Catalan to devote himself to the piano instrument which he played in various groups and recorded several albums (including the first under his own name) surprised those who expected him to capitalize on the fame acquired playing drums with the pianist.

If told about a band that consisted of only keyboards and drums, one wouldn’t be faulted for thinking, “Where’s the rest of the group?” But one listen to Amendola Vs. Blades—the funky California-based duo of Wil Blades on Hammond organ and clavinet and Scott Amendola behind the kit—and all fears will be assuaged. Blades’s cutting solos and deep bass lines make for a thick stew of soulful harmony and daring improvisation.

And Amendola’s beats are simply unstoppable, simultaneously pushing the duo to heights unknown and sending the listener into a joyful sonic trance. But, in a move away from their debut album, ‘Greatest Hits,’ the new album from Amendola Vs. Blades is bursting not only with creativity, but with personnel. ‘Everybody Wins’ features only three tracks that are exclusively duo. The rest of the album sees contributions from guitarist Jeff Parker (Tortoise), saxophonist Skerik (Les Claypool, Garage A Trois), percussionist Cyro Baptista (Herbie Hancock, Sting), and keyboardist Rob Burger (Tin Hat Trio, Laurie Anderson).

Japanese pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara dazzled the jazz world with her 2003 debut, Another Mind. Its mash of keyboard pyrotechnics and range of compositional styles was multiplied exponentially by her irrepressible energy. On that set she used variously sized ensembles to articulate her compositions. On Brain, Hiromi strips it back to a trio and offers a more intimate look at her wide musical universe, utilizing drummer Martin Valihora, bassist Tony Grey (both fellow Berklee College of Music alums), and alternately bassist Anthony Jackson.
