Bernstein Concert For Peace

Leonard Bernstein's Concert for Peace, a protest at the Vietnam War, took place in Washington Cathedral during January 1973 and featured a spellbinding performance of Joseph Haydn's Mass in Time of War. Here it's coupled with Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic's reading of Haydn's Symphony No. 96, "Miracle". Both were remastered from the original analogue tapes (stereo and quadraphonic).

The legendary composer and conductor conceived this sacred work as a Mass for John F. Kennedy, in conjunction with the dedication of the Kennedy Center in 1971.

Leonard Bernstein (August 25, 1918 – October 14, 1990) was an American conductor, composer, pianist, music educator, author, and humanitarian. Considered to be one of the most important conductors of his time, he was the first American conductor to receive international acclaim.

Why New York? "To record an album in New York with his heroes was also a lifelong dream for me. It felt so good the first time that I wanted to repeat it." Bernhard Wiesinger had been to New York several times before, but he never lived there for a long time. "The energy is simply different, even as far as such a production is concerned," he can only confirm. That's exactly what he excellently captured with "Enlightened". A brilliant decision.

Emanuel "Manny" C. Perlman is a lyric tenor, composer, performing and recording artist, spiritual and civic leader, and lecturer. Manny has performed throughout the United States and Europe. The legendary talk show host, Larry King, compared him to a combination Caruso and Mel Tormé. Manny earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and Voice from Rhode Island College and a Master’s Degree in Psychiatric Social Work from the Wurzweiller School of Social Work, Yeshiva University. He received a Doctorate in Music, honoris causa, from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York.

Anne-Sophie Mutter is widely regarded as one of the greatest violinists of modern times, combining technical virtuosity, beauty of tone, and exceptional charisma. She has nurtured the classical music scene through her own Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation, which has commissioned new works and fostered the careers of younger violinists. Mutter was born in the German town of Rheinfelden, near the Swiss border, on June 29, 1963. She took up the piano at five, and the violin shortly after. By nine she was advancing rapidly and had begun lessons with Aïda Stucki. Mutter appeared in recital at the Lucerne Festival when she was 13 and was heard there by legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan.
