Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D minor - Wiener Philharmoniker; Leonard Bernstein

…It is, above all, a triumph for the Vienna Philharmonic: their second memorable live Bruckner Ninth in so many months. …Given my reservations over Bernstein's handling of the first movement, this is obviously no front-line library recommendation. But, Bernstein being Bernstein, he can misdirect parts of the first movement and still go on to conduct an utterly memorable performance. As Schumann said of Chopin in a rather different context: "Hats off, gentlemen, a genius!".

A Quiet Place is an American opera in three acts, with music by Leonard Bernstein to a libretto by Stephen Wadsworth. The work is a sequel to Bernstein's earlier short opera Trouble in Tahiti. In its initial form, A Quiet Place was in one act, and followed Trouble in Tahiti after the intermission. The first performance was on 17 June 1983 by the Houston Grand Opera.

Who better to initiate the rebirth of Impulse! Records than Henry Butler? After all, the first time the label was given a new life in 1986, their first recording was Flyin' Around, his debut album as a leader. Viper's Drag is a collaboration between the pianist/composer with in-demand trumpeter and arranger Steven Bernstein (Sexmob, MTO Orchestra), surrounded by an all-star cast including drummer Herlin Riley, bassist Reggie Veal, saxophonists Michael Blake, Peter Apfelbaum, and Erik Lawrence, violinist Charlie Burnham, clarinetist Doug Wieselman, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, and guitarist Matthew Munisteri. The set features readings of Fats Waller and Jelly Roll Morton tunes, three Butler originals, and two other classic pre-War numbers.

This second gathering of MTB (titled for the surnames of Brad Mehldau, Mark Turner and Peter Bernstein,) is an intense, focused recital that reinforces the exalted position each member holds in the 2024 jazz landscape. Everyone listens. No one overplays or goes for "house." The ambiance is one of concentrated excellence. When eminent jazz practitioners with shared histories convene in the studio without rehearsal or preparatory gigs, a perfunctory, by-the-numbers session is often the outcome. That is decidedly not the case on Solid Jackson, whose personnel, four of whom participated on the well-wrought day-after-Christmas of 1994 Criss Cross album titled Consenting Adults, reside in any hardcore jazz connoisseur's "top-five." All in all, the session is, as the cliche goes, "all killer, no filler," performed at a level that might have provoked Charlie Haden to respond with a hearty "Solid Jackson." "There was a natural blend," Bernstein says. "We all go way back, and everyone was very comfortable being around each other. One thing I like about making a record is that you're able to spend a day with people you've been meaning to hang out with for a long time. It's not just a party. You're working, too. But that's how we interact socially - by playing music. I was amazed. It's 30 years after we did the first one, but everyone is relatively intact. It's really a miracle. We're all still here; we get to play together again.

This is a work tailor-made for a choreographer, and once again I am struck by how visually Kverndokk composes, and with what agility. The source of inspiration here is stated by the composer himself: it is a tribute to Leonard Bernstein, inspired by maestro Bernstein’s symphony “The Age of Anxiety”.But what is impressive and fascinating is this: despite the nod to his hero in his themes that touch upon scenes in “West Side Story, such as “Mambo” and “The Rumble”, it is Kverndokk through and through, and not Bernstein. When all is said and done, I would like to quote Stephen Sondheim, who also wrote the lyrics to “West Side Story”, and the protagonist of his musical, “Sunday in the Park with George”: Finishing the hat, mapping out the sky! That is always what it’s about. The work was written during the pandemic, but it would be inappropriate to associate it with this period, for the dramatic scope of the work is larger than what the lockdown of the country gave us.

This trio, Larry Goldings, Peter Bernstein and Bill Stewart, is an unusual camaraderie of world-class players; as they play you can sense the deep respect they have for one another. Their intensely sensual music grooves and glistens. With the trio's extensive use of music's dynamic possibilities, the passion and joy of this amazingly versatile instrumental lineup is there for all to hear.

1978 World Premiere Recording: Leonard Bernstein created this work in the late '70's - 1980. Songfest followed on the heels of the ill-fated but brilliant musical 1600 Pensylvania Avenue. Although devistated by 1600's one-week run on Broadway, Bernstein went on to compose several other works before his death in 1991. Songfest represents in my opinion, the finest of his late life works. Here we have the concept of putting 20th Century American Poetry to music. The result is a theatrical and powerful sounding work.

Frank Peter Zimmermann, who in 2010 was awarded the international Paul Hindemith Prize of the City of Hanau, makes a great case for these works. His Trio recently won the 2013 BBC Music Magazine Award for their Chamber recording of Beethoven’s Trio Op. 9. In the concerto Zimmermann teams up with Paavo Järvi, another recipient of the Paul Hindemith Prize and principal conductor of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra.
